Is Photo.net Dying?

Well according to your profile you haven’t been around for more than 8 years.

Don’t believe everything you read in a profile. When various redesigns of the site took place and for unknown technical reasons, many members’ previous accounts became unavailable to them, so they’ve had to start new accounts. This explains why a membership may go back many more years than the info in a profile might state.

True, previously posted as don_e begining in 2006. You've had several account changes as well.

There may be two issues. For not just pnet: the charismatic phase of digital photography ended and many people lost interest in photography after a few years, the elimination of many photography career-paths, and due to rise of blogs specializing in genres of photography or brands or types of cameras, and some in film sometimes exclusively (which did surprise me) -- so, fragmentation of the market. Blogs seem to convey presence or personality (and information) better than general forums.

For Photo.net: I don't know much about what pnet provides besides the forums; they do appear to have less readers and posters than other forums I visit (but pnet is my only membership), many posters here are posting images and not writing much, if anything (which is ok by me). Possibly, pnet didn't know what to do next after the "charismatic phase" and has drifted along til now. Maybe all is fine in those parts of pnet I don't read.

Sure looks like it’s a mess, at the least. No photo of the day, week... or anything other than really old. I was a member years ago and just came back on. Sure looks deserted compared to what is was like before. No more premium membership for me. I nuked it just minutes ago. The “buzz” on this site is not good.

I guess it all depends on when the owners decide if it's profitable or not ?

And this differs from other sites HOW?

It sure ain't dead yet, but it has changed character.

Less articles, for sure, but a lot more pictures, even if some former features are moribund.

Posts on its dying seem to come from people who haven't participated themselves for a very long time.

Previous poster joined in 2013 and has made 4 posts???

FYI

Previous poster had volumes posted back in the day, then pulled everything off before he left.

The four posts you see are grabs I did yesterday and the day before.

Common yourself. This site is tanking.

It used to be a blast to get picked for photo of the day or the editors choice. It was inspiring.

All gone, and the site doesn’t even use a secure server for payment now?

Lovely.

As with everything, there are going to be people protective of the site. It still serves a purpose and can be fun if you keep your expectations low, ignore the many software glitches and programming faults, and don’t compare it to days gone by. Though I still participate, I’m in your camp in thinking it’s a real shame and in some ways ridiculous how poorly it’s run. Nevertheless, it’s not a total loss.

Interesting. I'm quite sure that a number of people who have wanted to quit the site, especially after embarrassing gaffes, would like to have the procedures you used to "pull everything off"

Name change? or how?

I took him to mean he removed all the photos from his gallery. As we all know, forum content can’t be removed by user, so he obviously didn’t mean that. Interestingly, even banning doesn’t remove one’s forum posts, though there is one exception which no moderator has figured out. One rather active person who was banned has had all of his forum posts removed as well, which leaves a lot of conversations that are very strange.

Talking about photography is practically dead.

Depends on how dead the brain cells are …

Exactly, which goes to my point that 'ric' was very likely not a frequent participant, with the possible exception of picture and portfolio posts, a fairly limited use of the P.net site.

Not sure the brain cells have anything to do with it. The chatter/feedback on flickr is also almost non-existent

Oh, I didn’t realize you were talking about photography talk being dead on social media. Sorry. I try to pay as little attention to social media trends as possible and still enjoy talking about photos with friends, fellow photographers, and other artists.

I wouldn’t discount brain cells in all this, especially as being affected by social media though, as I said, I’m far from an expert on the latter.

Well with the ever-declining quality of the images posted It here over the last several years, it does not surprise me. It needs to be changed to "badsnapshot.net"

You certainly have a right to your opinions. My question would be how your comment is helpful in any way to the site? Post more high quality photos of your own, possibly you can make a small contribution to improving the standards.

My experience is that some people simply prefer to whine, rather than to forward the conversation: that usually doesn't fuss me at all. I see it as just part of the ebb and flow of life and this is my observation, nothing more and nothing less.

P.net has been "passing on" for nearly 20 years after the OP. . .

Let's keep this thread going on and on, folks, in memory of the "old school"

hahaha!

As my Grandma would say "you're a glutton for punishment".

Merry Christmas.

It needs to be changed to "badsnapshot.net"

Snapshots are too often maligned when they are some of the most important and most interesting photos taken. They usually have personal meaning and love behind them, are often treasured for years, and memorialize occasions and moments of significance.

Now, there's something about more polished photos that can certainly be appealing, though when one looks through particular portfolios one can sometimes see polish along with a lack of heart, soul, and passion. These more technically perfected photos certainly wouldn't be mistaken for snapshots but they're missing the vitality and personality of them, prettiness and sharpness notwithstanding.

People who live in pristinely polished glass houses shouldn't necessarily throw stones at the hoi poloi.

That being said, every one of us at our level can stand some improvement, probably we each have a bunch of winners and a bunch of losers, and we trudge on. The way to improve my own work is not to look down on the work of others, but actually to find things great and small to admire, things that I may not like but that wouldn't necessarily have occurred to me. I can learn as much from a bad photo (especially my own) as from a good one. It requires a little honesty with oneself and a little openness toward what's not necessarily one's taste.

'Dying' is an awfully emotive term, especially for those who have recently lost relatives or friends. Is it possible that some of these comments actually refer more to 'changing in a way I do not like' ? Change occurs in all aspects of life - do we complain, or cope with it ? Many of my photos reflect nostalgia for a lost way of life - at 70, this is hardly surprising. Then again, I was only 51 when this thread started, and had not even picked up a digital camera at that time. My then computer experience was confined to running a Unisys mainframe computer in London.

Change is a part of evolution (the alternative is probably extinction) - at least we haven't been out-evolved by a ship load of telephone sanitisers yet. PhotoNet is of necessity evolving, and who can foretell the future (except Nostradamus and Ursula Shipton, of course). The New Year starts in four days time - can we try to greet it with a little positivity, please ? There are still millions of photos to be taken, processed and published here on PN. My own limited contributions are almost always on No Words, with a weekly posting to Pentax Thursday, and I gain much inspiration from others' contributions, together with a desire to aspire to their standard. Without PN, this could not happen, as I have no interest in appearing on Social Media in any aspect of my life.
