Admires and Critiques

Recommended Posts

Due to being so exhausted from a workout, I decided to address this issue on a global basis. I'll emphasize right from jump that I post images for critique for the sort of feedback that allows me to grow as a photographer. Although I may appreciate tacking on an admire after providing a critique, an admire by itself accomplishes little or nothing.

Admires are equivalent to likes in other forums, the best example of which is No Words. As we all know, if comments accompany like in No Words, the Moderator has the right to notify the culprit in the form of a warning. The consequences become more severe if violating the forum's rules is repeated.

The upshot is this. If one browses through images posted for critique and spots one of my mine, but then decides that it isn't worth the time it takes to provide a critique, I'd be grateful if you just move on to something else.

Thank you all in advance. My best always, michael

The trouble is that admires/likes may be more or less significant depending on who posts them. Not everyone "likes everything". Some people are selective in their likes. However, of course, is it is difficult to know what kind of an "admire" it is. I suspect your request that people don't admire your work, but only critique it will not work, since only people who read this thread will know you don't want admires. And even if they have read it, they'll probably forget. Perhaps the best way to minimize admires is to post terrible or highly unusual pics, but there again that is no guarantee either. I think you are fighting internet culture which is probably impossible to win. A question: why do you dislike them so much? Why is it important and how does it affect you? I am, however, happy to not admire your photos. I used to critique but have given up as the site is so broken there seems little incentive to do so.

Hi Michael, the PHOTO CRITIQUES function on photos posted to portfolio's is unlikely to return to the glory days before the site

upheaval. Not everyone has the knowledge or inclination to give a wordy appraisal of all photos, assuming people have posted what they feel is a photo worthy of appearing on the site!. Surely if others chose to admire it by clicking, the very act of doing this has merit with the present state of things you will be lucky to get any response...BR...........GC.

Robin, I get your point about how I may value the opinions of certain photographers over others and that I can't control how they choose to express them In general, I can't control any PN members with respect to the method of feedback they opt to use. However, when an image is posted for critique, and the photographers doesn't get any "admires," there's no feedback at all, whether negative or positive. Moreover, I learn more very often from critiques that tell me what I could improve on. Of course, I cannot cannot control anyone's behavior other than my own.

GC, thanks for this thoughtful response. Fortunately, I can rely on a small number of PN members who follow my work to critique my work honestly. - - My best always, michael

At one time a serious effort was made by the Administration to turn the site into a simple QA site.

Photographs were not particularly welcome; Indeed at that time, I had a ban for adding photographs that reflected my thoughts on the conversation.

The above would have received a ban.

Dear Michael,

I agree 100% with you and just wrote about the same to a member over private email.

I discovered NO WORDS today but by chance. In fact, I looked at the last message posted on our site and saw "Monochrome", opened the forum, posted a picture and, huge crime, commented on a photo which is definitively forbidden. So, I got a private message from the offended victim and apologised privately and then publically on the forum.

As you mentioned, mee too I learn from comments not from admires.

Best wishes,

NO WORDS means NO PROGRESS.

No Words means what it says. There are plenty of places on the site where comments are welcome. No Words is the one forum set aside for the dialogue to take place only with pictures. You don’t want to participate? Don’t! But there’s no need to mischaracterize it.

"You talkin' to me?"
