jc1305us
I don’t normally do long exposure with film, as it’s costly to bracket shots, but I was testing my then new 2.8f. I was surprised at how black the sky was when I got the scans back! Wow, never got a sky that dark with digital. It’s a fairly pedestrian shot, I know, but thought I’d open the floor to critique. Thanks in advance!
MrAndMrsIzzy
As indicated it's a pretty routine shot. Manhattan skyline at night from across a body of water. Usually however that image is captured from The Jersey side of The Hudson, which (unless you're taking the shot from well North of where it's usually taken from) puts the Empire State Building on the left rather than the right. That being the case, I'm guessing that you took this from somewhere on the BQ side of the East River. That said, I'm still a little confused. It seems to me that if this image was captured from where I think it was captured, The Chrysler Building should also be visible, but that doesn't seem to be the case? samstevens
Here's what I also posted in the black and white forum: To my taste, the blacks are too black and, as you say, inky. The water loses its sense of "wateriness" and the buildings have a graphic look which, in itself is not a problem, except these have a false graphic look, kind of a not photogenic graphic look in which the blacks of the buildings look cut out as if they're being replaced by the black of the sky. 2 "You talkin' to me?" MrAndMrsIzzy
Also think cropping off some of that sky (maybe half of it) might not hurt. Maybe a little off the water at the bottom too. 2 Izzy From Brooklyn
dcstep
I have nothing to add what Sam and Izzy say. I could deal with the overly inky blacks if the water/city/sky were in better balance, via a crop.

MrAndMrsIzzy
Shot from the Hoboken waterway Oh! That's why The Chrysler Building isn't there. Izzy From Brooklyn
