How to check meter on Starmatic II?

How do you check to see if the "built-in automatic meter" on a Brownie Starmatic II is in working condition? Exactly what kind of meter is that and how do you use it?

In the event of low light, the meter needle appears in the viewfinder. If the needle doesn't appear in low light, or doesn't move out of the way in bright light, the meter is faulty. It's a selenium cell meter, "no user-serviceable parts". The camera is totally "automatic", within it's limitations, you can't actually "use" the meter, just believe it if it tells you there's not enough light for an exposure.
