Request for advice regarding mirrorless camera purchase

Look for an older Olympus EPL-7 or 8 as they can use the separate EVF. I use the EPL-7 and get very nice images from it. Most of the time I can shoot with only the LCD except in very bight light. You should be able to find one under your budget. The camera is small enough I take it with me on my bicycle rides.

Hi, Steve,

I was surprised my only interchangeable lens 35 is the Super Takumar f3.5. Here are a few shots:

I like that one!

(though maybe in monochrome?)

Glad it's worked out for you.

Two of my favourite manual lenses on my X-E1 are the Konica 40mm f1.8 Hexanon (pancake, so 'normal size' with the adaptor) and the 'modern' 7artisans 35mm f1.2, which is a native Fuji X-mount lens with a vintage optical formula (CZ Sonnar).

Thanks Steve

To recap, having moved from a very familiar inner city to an unknown outer rural area (my backyard is 4 acres of hickory and oak forest, rather than a 20 ft wide plot of grass and hedge), I needed to do a lot of photography to get to know what would work for me and that got unnecessarily expensive (and slow) on film. I am considering using a digital camera for color, reserving b&w (which I prefer) for film. The color rendering of the x-trans sensor for jpegs is excellent -- or, at least to my taste (which is the opposite of Ken Rockwell's), and the white balance is perfect or nearly so.

I set up the camera with the Astia sim, color and shadow set to 0, and sharpness, highlight tone, and noise reduction set to -2. Prep for web display amounts to adding an s-curve (or a gamma adjustment) and resampling with bicubic sharper.

For my old film lenses I bought KF Concepts' adapters for M42, M39, and Minolta MD. The depth of the MD and M42 adapters as well as the weight and size of the lenses (esp M42) led to most often choosing the smaller and lighter lenses. Besides the Takumar 35 and the 55, I found the Minolta 24mm f2.8 and 45mm f2 to be good choices, but the shallow M39 adapter and the size and weight of those lenses is where I found the most joy, especially the Summar and Jupiter 8 (which has got me interested in Sonnars).

I added a soft shutter release (I prefer I higher shutter button) and just read that there is a thumb rest for the camera. I think that will be useful to me.

Regards,

Don
