OK, have had enough of the cicadas and their deafening all-day romance buzz. Had to call in the cavalry. There's really no way to shoot these millions of 17-year-cycle critters that hasn't been done a thousand times over, but perhaps you good folks have something to share. Go!

Lifeguards on jet ski in Santa Cruz, California, patrolling the well known surfing area Steamer Lane.

Nikon Z6 ii + 500mm PF lens via the FTZ adapter, 1/1250 sec, f5.6, ISO 220

The Z6 ii turns out to have pretty good AF, certainly more than adequate to track the surfers and the jet ski.

Nice picture but I find the shadows distracting. I assume this was captured on a table inside a restaurant, so that you didn't have much control of the lighting.

Yep, I had to work quickly with a makeshift reflector before the plate was whisked off to a customer.

Robert, thanks for the info. It is a beautiful dish with nice color contrast. I am well aware that food photography is challenging. Hopefully you can reshoot it with more lighting control and less time constraint.

Backlighting is perfect for food pix. Brings out the shine in 'jus' and suchlike. So shadows are almost inevitable - and they add interest to what would otherwise just be blobs of colour on a white ground.
