What camera(s) are you using this weekend?

Recommended Posts

Again lots of rain this weekend. Did manage to go out and play with my latest addition to my Leica collection.

1959 Leica IIIg. Shot some Double-X this morning with a Summarit and Y1 filter.

That VC Meter must have seen a thing or two. Never seen one this battered.

If only the metal underneath was brass.

Stepping out this weekend with what looks like a virtually brand-new, fully functional black paint Nikon FA, purchased from a top flight Northern California ebayer I've purchased from for years. I also just picked up a virtually identical-condition silver FA so next weekend I'll be using them in tandem.

Once I have them both in-hand I'll do a "family shot" with the 5 prime Nikkor lens (20-35-85-135-200) setup I'll be using with them.

For a while, I have been enjoying my battered <NEW> Nikkor 35mm 1:2.0. I even found an original Ai conversion set for it but have yet to put it on. Then this week, a like-new 35mm 1:2.0 AiS presented itself, and I had to own it as a perfect fit for my F3. Optical formular is the same so I don't expect any surprise, but it feel so smooth...

Film is home rolled HP5+.

Yeah, the AIS lenses are sooo smooth. The 35/1.4 is exactly the same.

if you get them in really clean shape, many of the AI lenses, the 135/2.8 and 200mm f4 I’m thinking of in particular, are extremely smooth and on a just-higher build level than the later AIS lenses. In the case of a 35mm f2 or 1.4 though, the AIS’s would be my choice

Just for the hell of it I've loaded a film into this Zeiss Ikon Ikonette 35 (type 500/24). I last used it about 5 years ago and I recall it took very good photographs with it's 45mm f/3.5 Nova lens. It was aimed directly at the feminine market, as much a fashion accessory as a camera, but it suffered from mechanical and light-leak issues and wasn't a great commercial success. Sure is pretty, though...

My wife and I are going on a little road trip to Stratford, ON this Sunday for a little outdoor meet-up picnic and stroll with a friend who lives about the same distance away, but in a completely different direction. All three of us will be taking digital Nikons (DX for my wife, FX for our friend and I). My friend is also (with my encouragement) going to give his new-to-him Minolta Autocord an outing so I'll bring along my 3.5 Xenotar Rolleiflex to be kinda matchy-matchy. Close as I can get, anyway!

Contax T2 and Olympus Mju: Zoom 115

Two cameras from 1991 and 1997 respectively that I would never have purchased given the crazy prices they command, but never-the-less now mine because they were recently gifted to me.

The T2 was defective and the owner refused dealing with selling it. I accepted them only because he threatened to trash them otherwise. I guess I am now indebted somehow!

It turned out that the T2 suffered only from a lazy shutter which was easily repaired.

From my initial handling of both, I can safely say that I will not become friends with the Olympus, but the Contax could be a nice travel companion.

Both cameras require DX coded film cartridges and the only such film in the house is Fujifilm C200, thus that's the film I'll run through them this weekend.

BTW, I was surprised to find out that the Adox and Formapan rolls I had recently purchased didn't have DX coding!?

And a Post Scriptum: The Contax looks and feels nice, but after you open it up you'll see a lot flexboards etc fitted with glue and tape and some respect is lost - not a pretty sight.

Looking forward to seeing your results, NHSN. Never tried the Olympus Zoom 115, but I would guess maximum aperture at 115mm would be rather slow. In Olympus I prefer the single focal length Stylus Epic with its 35mm f 2.8. At the end of their production they went for around 80 USD. Glad you got the Contax working.
