Nikon USA Mother's Day Sale

BeBu Lamar

They have the Z7 for $2200 or so. It's kind of tempting.

Moderator note: Since Dieter and I started pretty much the same topic, I have moved my post to Dieter's thread. Meanwhile BeBu replied to my original thread. Therefore, the order of the posts are off. This thread was originally started by Dieter.

Actually, some run until the End of May, some to Mid-May - the list of how long the sale lasts is here: https://www.nikonusa.com/capturesavings/Capture-Savings-Instant-Savings-Promotion.pdf

And here are the offerings: Mother’s Day Camera & Lens Sale - Shop Gifts for Mom | Nikon

Notable: $500 off the D850, $300 off the D780. $200 off the Z 70-200/2.8S,Z 24-70/2.8S and Z 14-24/2.8S

Recall that last October, there was a D850 sale at $2500. That same deal is back:

Nikon D850, New $2500 [sale Ended]

Since I got e-mail notification from B&H, I am using their link below, but those same deals are available at other authorized Nikon USA dealers:

Rebates & Promotions - Featured Savings | B&H Photo Video

Some highlights:

  • D850, $2500
  • The F-mount 16-35mm/f4 AF-S VR is $800. I don't think I have seen it this low before.
  • The Z-mount f2.8 S "trinity" 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 are all $200 off each.
  • The Z-mount 24-200 is $100 off
  • The Z5 body is $999 as we discussed earlier

Interesting that BeBu "I will never buy a mirrorless camera" Lamar is interested in a Z7 , which is actually more like $2300, but some stores also throw in an XQD card (e.g. B&H includes a 32G Sony XQD. Adorama gives you a 64G, which is more useful given the size of those 46MP raw files.). Or one can get a D850 for $2500.

Both are quite good deals.

To me, it looks like Nikon is gradually unloading their inventory of F-mount products. As I mentioned earlier, e.g. the sale price for the 16-35mm/f4 AF-S VR is very low.

Meanwhile, it looks like the Covid-related production issues and shortage is easing. Some of the fairly recent lenses such as the 14-24mm/f2.8 S and 70-200mm/f2.8 S in the Z mount are discounted for the very first time, and the 14-24 was announced merely 7.5 months ago, but those discounts are not that deep, only $200. Back in 2019, Nikon announced the 24-70mm/f2.8 S early that year, and by Thanksgiving, I managed to get $300 off when I bought mine. For those who are not in a hurry, I think those f2.8 zooms will get even cheaper. Whether it is worthwhile to wait another few months to potentially save an additional $100 or $200 is up to each individual to decide.

I don't like mirrorless but since Nikon doesn't make cameras in Japan any more except the D6 which is out of my league. The Z7 is about the last of the Nikon I can still buy new that is made in Japan.

I'm not sure it makes sense to buy the first version of the Nikon Z6 or Z7 as a new camera, unless it has a big discount.

The first-generation of the Z6 and Z7 are now about 2.5 years old, and at least in the US, their current discount is pretty big:

  1. Z6: introduced at $2000 and currently at $1400. The 2nd-generation Z6 II is $2000, same as the initial price for the Z6 and not yet discounted.
  2. Z7: introduced at $3400 and currently at $2300. The 2nd-generation Z7 II was introduced at $3000 ($400 lower than the Z7) and is not yet discounted.

Those 2nd-generation Z6/Z7 have a 2nd memory card slot: XQD/CFx + UHS-II SD and dual processors inside with somewhat better AF, but otherwise the improvements are more evolutionary. If you don't mind that single XQD/CFx card slot and shoot mainly still subjects, I think the Z7 is still a very good choice. At $2300, the Z7 is actually cheaper than the deeply discounted D850 at $2500. The thing is that while I love XQD/CFx and prefer them over the more fragile SD, not everybody would like to spend the extra money on those cards. And some people really would like to have dual cards.

Nikon is going to stop manufacturing camera bodies in Japan altogether. I am not sure they will continue to make the D6 as its replacement Z9 is already on the horizon. I think Nikon will just produce a bunch of D6 for those who prefer DSLRs and gradually sell them off. Very few lenses will be produced in Japan also. Among my five Z-mount lenses, only the 24-70mm/f2.8 S was made in Japan. Today, even the 14-24mm/f2.8 S and 70-200mm/f2.8 S are made in Thailand. If one insists on buying Japanese made Nikkor lenses, you will be limited to like the 58mm/f0.95 and perhaps some of those $10K+ super teles.

If I get the Z7 (a big if ) I would only get the 24-70mm f/2.8 S that's all. I would try to use it on a shifting back on a view camera. I think it's better suited for this than a DSLR because of the large lens mount and short flange distance. Also live view is good for view camera.

Been back and forth on the 35mm S but with the $150 off I went ahead and got it. Back ordered though, hopefully it wont be too long.

The 35mm/f1.8 S was one of the three initial lenses when Nikon announced the Z System back on August 23, 2018 (along with the 24-70mm/f4 S and 50mm/f1.8 S). After I bought the Z6 + kit lens, the 35mm was the first additional lens I added. It is a focal length I like.

I noticed that it is out of stock at Adorama, Amazon, and B&H, but looks like perhaps Mike's Camera has it: Camera Product Specifications | Mike's Camera

Actually last week, before the current sales started, I also ordered some Nikon items from B&H, taking advantage of the PayBoo sales tax savings. Since Nikon USA seems to have the 35mm S available, hopefully B&H can get a fresh supply soon.
