Sources for a better 4x5 Ground Glass/Fresnel?

I'm looking for less pricy alternatives to the Maxwell. Anyone have a source?

A plastic A4 size whole page magnifier from the "dollar" store. Actually costs $2 at my local shop. Cut to size with scissors, put grooved side down on the outside of the ground glass, and fix in place somehow. Definitely brightens the view particularly with slow wide-angle lenses.

Not that easy. To do it right.

First the focal length of this fresnel will be wrong. Then you don’t just cut it to size. Yo cut it so the center remains centered. Then it is too thin and easily scratched.

Firstly, resign yourself to the fact that an LF ground-glass and f/5.6 lens is never going to be as bright as a 35mm SLR with f/1.8 lens.

 

Secondly, a Fresnel screen brightener makes overall viewing easier, but doesn't make precise focussing easier. You need a good focus magnifier for that.

 

I have a Graflex Fresnel screen fitted to one of my 5x4s, and plain GG in another. Composition is easier with the Graflex screen, but not focussing. The Fresnel lines get in the way.

 

A good, big dark cloth is the cheapest way to brighten your screen!
