Basic Guidelines: In the strictest sense, nature photography should not include "hand of man elements". Please refrain from images with buildings or human made structures like roads, fences, walls. Pets are not permitted. Captive subjects in zoos, arboretums, or aquariums are permitted, but must be declared, and must focus on the subject, not the captivity. Images with obvious human made elements will likely be deleted from the thread, with an explanation to the photographer. Guidelines are based on PSA rules governing Nature photography which also cover the Nature Forum. Keep your image at/under 1000 pixels on the long axis for in-line viewing. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site at Flicker, Photobucket, your own site, etc.

Each member please post no more than just one image to this weekly thread per week. If the information is available, many members appreciate information on your approach to making the image and the names, both common and scientific, of the subject(s). However, while encouraged, these are not required as a component of your contributions.

American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) late Saturday afternoon last at the Bear River MBR. While pickings were pretty thin this early in the season, the coots, geese, blackbirds, seagulls, and various ducks are out in force, with a few early grebes, pelicans, herons, and others starting to make an appearance. We even saw a few in-transit tundra swans. Still no ibis or herons, but they will come. It will be interesting to see what impact this year's early warm spell and severe drought have.

Double-crested cormorant with catch. D500, 500PF, 1/1600s, f/5.6, ISO 3200. Generally, those bird have swallowed their catch almost as soon as they surface - so a bit unusual to have this one "present" the catch before swallowing it head first.

We only get White Pelicans here on occasion in small numbers - they certainly aren't regulars.

I'm somewhat embarrassed t disclose that I took this shot at Disney World, Animal Kingdom (Florida). This is an immature animal.

As long as you disclose that it is a captive animal, it is ok. However, with the human-made vehicle in the image, this one is more suitable for the Friday, Nature Unlimited.
