105 macro S,

Based on the roadmap Nikon released on 10th October 2019, two Z-mount macro lenses will be available by the end of 2021, a 105mm S and a 60mm non-S, which was later on changed to 50mm. However, that was before Covid-19 hit. Given that we are in the latter part of March, but Nikon has yet to announce any new lens in 2021 (or December 2020), there are obvious production and distribution delays. There is little doubt that there will be plenty of delays to fulfill Nikon's Z-lens roadmap.

This 2019 roadmap is a large, 2362x3203 JPEG file. Please expand it to see the details.

Mine was awful. Chromatic woes...:(

Mine too (105mm AF micro-Nikkor). And very soft at non-macro distances wide open.

Resoundingly beaten by a Tamron SP 90mm macro of similar vintage. Unfortunately also a bit 'fringey' on a modern high-res digital sensor.

But my older 55mm F/3.5 AI micro-Nikkor still beats all-comers at all distances. Go figure!

Obviously moving the camera rig is a whole different thing. I've done both methods manually and am not sure which is better. So far I think refocusing the lens has worked best for the things I do. My hope is a Micro Nikkor with AF would make the process easier. Right now I use a 55 mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor and it works well, so I'd want a similar focal length. Surprised to hear the complaints about the 105.

Does focus stacking get rid of LoCa fringes?

I guess if the software doesn't 'see' them and/or has a better bit from another image, maybe not!

That might depend on the helicoid or the all-move method. They behave in some very unpredictable (to me!) ways.

For very 3D things like a bunch of flowers, I find the helicoid method works best because there are fewer parallax/perspective changes to sort out.

Where-as thinner or more 'solid' things work either way. There is a table on the Zerene site that correlated the best method by type,

That Sigma sounds almost perfect. It might get added to my shopping list.

From what I've seen and read, sharper than the highly-regarded Sony FE 90/2.8 macro lens but a bit lacking in AF performance especially in low-light situations. Substantially cheaper though, but without OSS (leaving just the in-camera sensor stabilization).
