Film Camera Week for February 26, 2021

Recommended Posts

Greetings, all and welcome to our new thread. Post all the images you like from any film camera. I'll start with some images from a roll of Ilford FP4+ that I processed and scanned earlier this week. Camera was Minolta XE-5. Lens noted in caption,

I had planned to take a break from winter precipitation photos, but I had few at the beginning of this roll.

I was impressed by the results from my first outing with the Astrum Foto-100 film, and and here are a few frames from the second. I'm still impressed. The camera was a Canon T-90 fitted with a Canon 35-70mm f/4 lens, and the film was developed in PMK Pyro.

Here are some from the Minolta SRT 303 with the 50mm Minolta MC Rokkor-PF f/1.7 lens that I featured in last weekends "What camera..." thread. As I mentioned then, I was intending to sell the camera, but I enjoyed my session with it so much that I changed my mind. I fear Gear Retention Syndrome is taking over from GAS, which I have pretty much under control. The film was the interesting Astrum Foto-200 developed in PMK Pyro.

A few shots from a roll of Delta 100 in the Canon Model 7. I discovered when focusing the first image that the rangefinder had gone out of whack in the horizontal plane so I resorted to scale focus. Easy fix on a 7 as the adjustments are all on the outside, but still... First two and last images shot with the 50 f1.8 Serenar, the middle two with the 35 f2.8 Jupiter 12, a lens I've not explored nearly enough.

During the last several Film Camera Weeks, Rick Drawbridge has been introducing a lot of us to the various Astrum films in 100 and 200 asa. About the same time as Rick's first posting, I received one roll each of the 200 emulsion and another of their films labeled FN-64. Again the emulsion is noted as extended red sensitive, fine grain and coated on a plastic base.

Long story short, I had some staining issues with the 200 material and need to work them out. The FN-64 material was very interesting to say the least, and another order is in. Here are a few examples of that FN-64 1821596356_2k21-013-026ces5bcbm4x6.jpg.d62c8ea30202446dc368bb466188981c.jpg material.

Zorki-4 / Jupiter-8, Astrum FN-64 @ 50asa, Hypercat developer and V600 scans.

Shooting at asa 50 is a challenge with any camera as the speed is 1/30 sec with f8 settings. . . old fut shake does not help ! In mixed, average light levels (above shot) this FN-61 handles very well to my Zone System brain. When an extreme range is exposed, the hi-lites tend to be blocked. Compare this picture to the one above the Coconut scene. Different films and very different results. I will be able to solve 2092852296_2k21-013-011ces5bcbm4x6.jpg.ac31ef4fcb8490a3dca72e43c9aa3435.jpg these "problems" with some simple increased exposure (asa 32) and cutting back on my developing about 2 minutes.

Last entry. Here is an outdoors capture on this film. ASA 50 yields a full scale negative and very good grain. I look forward to running the other emulsion thru the cameras and working out some filter factors for the tropical skies here in Hawaii. Developing time on the FN-64 was 13 minutes. 3ml of Hypercat in a 450ml Nikor. Aloha, Bill2107517881_2k21-013-034ces10-horz.jpg.175dfda13eac00d9cac2478b70db9581.jpg

Nice work with the Astrum stock, Bill. I was mightily impressed by the Foto-100 but not quite so much by the Foto-200, though I may give it another trial. I was tempted by the FN-64 but decided that it really was going to be a little slow for my kind of photography, taking into account the loss of speed with the PMK Pyro processing. Your results show it to be competitive with Pan F 50 in terms of tonality and grain. I have some more of the Foto-100 on order but it seems to be in short supply, unsurprisingly enough!

I should add that when the pre-soak is dumped, the liquid will be very dark black / green. Perhaps the spent developer liquid will also be this color when the developer is dumped if the pre-soak is skipped.

Yes, that's usually just the anti-halation coating washing off on some films. Even if I refresh the pre-soak water in the tank, with Fomapan in medium/large format, the developer still tends to look a bit greenish when I pour it out.
