In particular, don't count on the SSD failing gracefully in to a 'read-only' mode when they exhaust their write cycles. I've had SSDs long enough to experience two failures, and they were both total losses. Make your backups!
paddler4
Make your backups! Couldn't agree more. Good that you used the plural. Everyone should have two backups, one of which is off-site. Personally, I use a local mirror, which I update at least daily, and an online backup that runs continuously in the background. For an interesting read about the relative reliability of SSDs and HDs, and some information about how to tell that an SSD is beginning to fail, see https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-reliable-are-ssds/. I've had only one SSD that appeared to be failing--the sign was file system errors--and that was after many years.
