Challenging action-sports photography

Actually I’ve found it isn’t the equipment that’s at risk as much as it is your body. I’ve been shooting college level sports since Charles Barkley had hair and never had any equipment damage. On the other hand Barkley landed on the photographer sitting next to me one night. She weighed maybe 100 pounds soaking wet and had to be carried out on a stretcher. She lived, we are friends on FB now.

Although most surf photography is done standing on the beach with a telephoto lens (that's how I do it), the best surf photographs are obtained when the photographer is in the ocean and close to the action, putting both the photographer and their equipment at risk..
