I don’t shoot enough.

 

 

 

Being 90% retired I absolutely have the time, and I certainly have the equipment to do almost anything. But inertia can be hard to overcome. Recently I was on the boardwalk on Jones Beach on New York’s Long Island late on a Saturday afternoon when I came across two young ladies attempting portraiture with a cell phone. With my usual forwardness I told them that a real camera, like the SL 3 hanging from my shoulder, could probably do a better job. And with an abundance of carelessness they went along with the project.

 

 

 

The Nifty Fifty got mounted and I took the first frame, limited DOF and all is good. However, with the colorful, almost setting sun in the background I felt I could do better. Activate the pop-up flash, underexpose the ambient and fire. Photo number two in the bag and I am pleased with myself, but decide to go wild with the group shot. More ambient underexposure; serious color sunset in the third shot. Lovely! BUT! I am a lazy son of a gun and mostly snapshoot in P mode with auto ISO, which here gave me 1/100, f/9 at ISO 1000, after I dialed in -2 1/3 stop underexposure. Since I was afraid of losing the sun I didn’t delve more deeply into manual settings. If i had felt sure I had ten more minutes I would have gone M, ISO 100, 1/200 and f/2.0. Same exposure, but less DOF which I think would have been beneficial. Ah well, live and learn. And work faster! Furthermore, it also shows that you can get pretty darn decent, professional looking portraits without dragging out the 5 DsR, the EF 85 mm f/1.4 L IS USM, and a soft box with a heavy duty location strobe.

Some egg on my face. The photo sequence got scrambled during the attachment process. The picture at the bottom was the first, ambient only, shot. I then activated the flash and underexposed the ambient by a stop. Same woman, same pose, more color, that became the top image. The friend stepped in, that was my last shot, but ended up as the middle image above. Mea culpa. The keen, and analytically knowledgeable photographer would of course see this!

I don´t shoot enough either, even though I´m 100% retired. I can never get the nerve up to ask strangers to pose for me, those are nice photos. I especially like the first one posted.
