Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8 Lens Release Button Stuck

New to the forum, I've been scouring the internet for a solution to this issue.

 

I have recently purchased a Canon AE-1 through Ebay for my girlfriend’s birthday. Neither of us know very much about film photography or cameras, so I’ll admit to being out of my depth. I have been trying to figure out how to use it prior to giving it to her and may have messed something up.

 

I took the lens off of the camera by pressing the silver lens release button and rotating the lens around counter clockwise. This all seemed to work fine, however when I tried to put the lens back on, it doesn’t want to “click” into place. The lens rotates clockwise into what seems to be the correct position, but there is no “click” to lock the lens down. The silver lens release button seems to be stuck in a depressed position.

 

I read on the Canon AE-1 manual that you should avoid pressing the lens release button when the lens is off of the camera as it may not pop back up, although it offers no solution. I’m not sure if I did this; I don’t recall the button really clicking down in the first place when taking the lens off. It’s possible the button was depressed when it arrived and I just didn’t notice it. Either way, it seems that the depressed lens release button is preventing the lens from “clicking” back into place.

 

Is there a relatively simple solution to this, or does this require an extensive repair?
