Electrodist
Can anyone identify the cause of these edge spots and scratches on my home developed 120 film? Processed in Xtol using a Jobo 1502 canister and reel. It only creeps into the image area on a few frames and looks like tiny dust, otherwise it looks like scratches on the edge of the frame. https://i.ibb.co/09cKH1M/IMG-8333.jpg' alt='IMG-8333.jpg'> IMG-8333 IMG-8334 Edited September 12, 2020 by Electrodist
rodeo_joe1
Can anyone identify the cause of these edge spots and scratches on my home developed 120 film? Yes. It's light creep past the backing paper. Caused by exposing the unwrapped film to bright light out of the camera. A fast film like Delta 3200 is especially susceptible to edge fogging like that. Carry a 6" square of kitchen foil with you. Load and unload the film in dim light or in the shade of your body, and wrap the film in the aluminium foil as soon as it comes out of the camera. The longitudinal scratches are due to abrasion of the film with the developing spiral - pretty unavoidable. In IMG-8334 the spots might be due to finger-printing as you handled the film to load it. Almost any pressure or contact with such a fast film will develop as a mark. But why worry as long as the marks are outside of the picture area? glen_h
120 film commonly gets this, and most often it is out of the frame. Rarely it gets a little into the frame, but probably not within the frame of the negative carrier of most enlargers. I don't know about scanners. -- glen
