'Smartphone camera use on the rise among pro photographers'

Recommended Posts

It matters because I've got absolutely nothing better to do or to think about. The hell with it, I'm going for a walk!

Bummer. Get out one of Plato’s dialogues. That oughtta do the trick! :)

Hope your walk is good. Foggy and chilly up here in SF. Hope it’s nicer down there.

My iphone 6 has really saved me. I have had about 8 kidney surgeries over the past few years and have not been able lift my DLSRs and L series lenses for many years now even after numerous PT visits. I really enjoy the Moment 18 and 58mm lenses, the bokeh is nice for a phone. I have been doing alot of ICM color photography w/ the slow shutter ap of flowers, and merging with old photos of cemetery statues taken in IR in my 5DMkII IR converted camera. I am in the process of selling many of my lenses to survive after my hours were cut 50%. I am still lucky to have a job and healthcare, and a camera I can lift. Hopefully in a year I will be able to lift, work full time, and travel again and buy back a few lenses. but my iPhone will still be part of my creative workflow.

I virtually never use my phone for pics, unless it is to record my license plate or when in a store to show the price etc etc. Don't really know why I don't. I am impressed by the quality of lot of good phone photography, but I just don't like using it for my shots - somehow it just doesn't fit into my workflow.

I bought a new cell phone not too long ago. Considering the prices on them these days, I'd hope they could do anything including walk the dog, fetch the car, and cook supper. I've mostly been an iPhone guy, so I was looking at the new models, and it came down to the 11. Not the "pro" models with the souped-up cameras, but the regular 11 with the less advanced photographic capabilities. Yes, cameras on phones have gotten way better (especially the apple phones), and of course I take photos with the phone. BUT I went with the base model 11, for the cost, but also because I still tend to resist the phone as a serious photographic instrument.

That said, you really can't beat a phone for instant posting of people, things and activities on social media.

I was surprised how well my Galaxy 7 shot stills and short video clips when I found myself without a "real" camera when my senior group toured a firemen's training facility, The main problem is that in the bright sun, you can't see the LED. You kind if hold the phone up and guess that it's got the scene framed right. Also, tripping th shutter requires a third hand.

Brad Evans who was a member here for many years has used his phone for quite some time in his street photography. If there are any doubters about a phone being able to capture great light and street scenes, check out his work.

I always used to carry a back-up body with me, a role now passed to a smartphone. I use my camera for my work, the 'phone for everything else but being surprised by how well it copes in difficult lighting. If tech moves on at its current pace, I can see some using a fake DSLR body into which they secrete a 'phone for 'pro' use. Imagine a bride in a few years time quizzing her photo bill when told her wedding was captured on an iPhone...

Never mind the bride. It's the parents who pay for the photographer. :)

Agreed - he was one of the first professionals making extensive use of phone cameras here on this forum, and he developed some great techniques and awareness for doing that.

Brad, good to see you back, or maybe you never left. Now for some new photos...

Thanx! I pop in once in a while. :)
