I think that's because they were shot with a Mamiya RB67 camera, which is a medium format, single lens camera with a waist level finder, same as Hasselblad, Bronica, and various twin lens reflex cameras. You typically hold the camera at waist level and look down through the viewfinder screen at the top of the camera. I've done it many times myself!
