mbeebee
Okay, here's a rather embarassing situation. I seem to have lost my tool palettes for Nikon Scan. I normally have several palettes holding various tools (crop, info, etc.) set up next to my image for scanning. I haven't scanned anything in awhile, and when I opened up Nikon Scan, they were gone, and I can't seem to get them back. I've used the "View" menu as well as the little "Tools" drop-down button to no avail -- I just click and nothing happens. I can get the Progress Window to disappear and reappear, but none of the others. Needless to say this slows down my scanning a bit. Anyone have similar problems? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! denis_van_der_staey
For an unknown reason, the Nikon Scan Tool Palette might got hidden by the Windows toolbar, which is mostly the bottom line of the screen. Try this : Start Nikon Scan. Select 'view' -> 'Tool palette 1'.If you don't see it, right-click in an empty place in the Windows toolbar. In the pop-up select 'Properties'. Then in the Properties window, deselect 'always on top'. Do you see the top of the Tool Palette now ? Drag it to some better place, then reset everything by redoing the above selecting 'always on top' again. Tell us if this was of any help... john_shriver
This is one of the wonderful "features" of Nikon Scan. One of the problems with Nikon's scanners is that they, unfortunately, come with Nikon's buggy software. They are obviously incompetent at both "safe programming" and "effective software quality testing". Happens to me too. You start a scan, and suddenly the tool windows just pop out of existence. Be persistent, restart, reboot, maybe it will come back. If not, you will have to un-install Nikon scan, and talk to Nikon support (online, free) to get instructions about how to completely purge Nikon Scan out of the Windows Registry, and then re-install. I've had to do this once so far. (Nikon Scan apparently has bugs where it lays turds in the Windows registry, and then can't get rid of them, nor can it get around them. Worse, neither the uninstall or install scripts purge its Registry entries.)
mbeebee
Thanks for the responses. I tried hiding the Windows toolbar, but still couldn't find the palattes. I'm inclined to think John might be on to something: I reinstalled Nikon time four times yesterday, with no progress. And each time I opened the new install of Nikon Scan, it showed not only a preview of the latest scan, but a offered a list of my customized palattes, suggesting that something was getting left behind in the uninstall process, and perhaps carrying over the disappearing palattes problem. I've deleted the temp folder, but that makes no difference, so it looks like I'll need to get on the phone with Nikon. Sigh. . . . Thanks again, Martin
john_lacy
I had the same problem and realized that I had resently switched screen resolution. It turned out that the palettes were just off screen. To access them I temporarily switched the screen resolution and repositioned the palettes where I could access them. tom_schneider
I guess this is a late addition by three years, but. . I just had the same problem. I have dual monitors, and since the last time I used Nikonscan, I switched my secondary monitor from the left side to the right side (in the windows display properties) Apparently, Nikonscan is too stupid to figure this out. When I dragged my secondary monitor back to the left side, voila! there were all my palettes. There has to be some file somewhere that tells nikonscan where you left you palettes. I guess I can't be too hard on Nikon - I had this same problem with Microsoft Excel. I also logged onto my computer using a different name, and Nikon scan opened with all the palettes in their default positions(since I had never used it in that profile) Hope this helps someone! mbeebee
<p>Tom's last suggestion was the easiest. I logged into XP under a different user, and everything was back to normal.</p>
ryan_hertz1
<p>I've fought this same issue numerous times over the years typically reinstalling as a final solution. The suggestions on the monitor resolution / multiples got me thinking.<br> I opened the screen properties and swapped my monitors left to right... voila there's the palette.</p>

david_zamorski
<p>Wow - so many years after this topic is still valid. I registered to phono.net just to provide the quickest (I hope) solution for this annoying problem. Indeed it is related to the fact that Nikon Scan saves the last position of tool palette. It does it exactly in the system registry. To fix it just open regedit.exe and search for a string: CoolPaletteStates which is under HKEY_USERS\<some looong ID here>\Software\Nikon\Nikon Scan Source\4.0\General. You can rename or just remove the CoolPaletteStates property. After that you will loose all saved configuration of your ToolPalette (including position), but you will not have to create another system user or reinstall the program. Hope that help. <br> David</p>

httpwww.photo.netbarry
I'm just curious on what Nikon Scan works on? Nothing current in the Mac world that I know of. I guess if I want to scan I'll have use one of the other programs like VuScan unless anyone has a recommendation.
