marc_felber1
It is worth it if you lost $3,900 worth of gear on a trip to the falklands, and only being charged $200 for the past two years for your renters policy. However, they will cancel you if you file to many claims.
Mark Keefer
I
I would like to know if it's worth purchasing an insurance for a camera. I just purchased a Canon 7D at Best Buy (lucky me!) and I also purchased an insurance that covers accidental drop, spill, and lens cleaning. The price was $375 for four years. After purchasing it, I sort of have a buyer's remorse because that's a lot of money! Any opinion is appreciated.
Don't beat yourself up. You paid for piece of mind. If something happens hope they honor it if they are still in business in a year? Hopefully they will, they are a big retailer probably more stable than most. I usually do not take the insurance, especially for $375 which would probably cover most accident repairs from Canon. But if you drop the camera in water or something that is not repairable you have piece of mind for 4 years. If they don't find a way to get out of the warranty. Google the horror stories. My brother bought a TV from a different nationwide electronics chain retailer years ago and paid for the extended warranty and the outfit went Bankrupt and closed the next year. These warranties are easy money for retailers as they make more money than they lose and if they weren't making money off of this they would not be doing it. Make sure you keep that warranty in a safe place you will remember where it is in 35 months. It is a gamble. Of the 6 DSLRs I have owned over 15 years i only once had a tripod topple and damage the camera where it cost me about $300 for the repair sending it to Canon. But that was a repairable camera. It's a gamble. Your betting you might accidently damage the camera and Best Buy is playing the odds that you will be one of the majority that won't return it. And if you read some of the reviews on their warranty you might want to try and get your money back. Just my opinion and if you do a search on the subject i am not the only one. But possibly not everyone has had a bad experience. Here is an interesting review LINK Good luck Edited April 27, 2020 by Mark Keefer Cheers, Mark
Mark Keefer
I would like to add, there are people who have gotten good service from their warranty and I buy things from Best Buy a lot, they are one of the few electronics stores around and I can find one in my travels. I like them, I buy stuff from them, but I just don't buy their warranty. It is a personal choice. They are a huge company, I am sure out of the millions and millions of electronic items sold, there are bound to be complaints and yes even class action lawsuits. William Michael
If only I had noticed before you went to the effort . . . anyway, thank you for your effort. It's probably worthwhile for all of us to check the OP date when reading the most recent post and see if that post has bumped a dormant thread several years. There has been quite a lot of this type of silliness recently - idle hands, too much time on their hands, etc. WW
