My Canon EOS300D I have had for several years and has been very reliable. Last year the std EFS 18-55 lens became a 33-55 lens as the mechanism seems not to want go any further.

So I purchased a Canon 17-85, this felt heavy but gave a good overlap to my 75-300 lens. Problem was that this went wrong after about 12 months and was going to cost quite a bit to repair!

As I was soon going to Australia on holiday and needed something to replace it. So I widened my search to Tamron, I have had a Tamron before, to save weight and the hassle of changing lenses in the field I purchased an 18-200 Zoom lens.

I only had a short time to try the lens as we were moving house just before we left for OZ and all seemed well.

I had not taken many photos with this lens before I discover that there is a problem. After a few shots the camera jams and sometime give me a fault code of 99. Removing and replacing the lens fixes this. But it keeps happening and I presumed it was a camera fault.

When I got home I tried it with my working Canon lenses and all is fine.

So after discussing this with Amazon they sent me another lens, but this does the same!

Am I to presume this is a compatibility problem or is there a setting on the camera I have to change?

Sorry to ramble on but not sure which way to go with this.

I'm no Canon expert, but here goes anyway. It's not an issue with camera settings and it's unusual to get compatibility problems with lenses designed for digital SLR's. It may be worth cleaning the electrical contacts on the camera.

You really need to get hold of another Canon body, preferably a much more up to date one. Perhaps from a friend, or hire one. If that exhibits the same behavior it points to the lens.

I had a D300 a digital lifetime ago. It was a great camera for its time. You are most likely encountering problems and incompatibilities with your camera. Best case decide you more than got your money out of the D300 and modernize your digital body. I'm sure you can find a newer Rebel body for not very much with a new 18-55mm kit lens that will make you smile with the image quality. Good Luck!

After a few shots the camera jams and sometime give me a fault code of 99.

Error 99 typically means there is a fault with the electronic/electrical connectivity of the lens/camera mount, or battery/battery terminals/battery compartment.

Firstly I would ensure that both the lens and the camera mount contacts are clean, dry and appear in good order (especially that the camera mount contacts are not worn)

Secondly, the battery and battery compartment contacts need to be clean dry and not worn or damaged. Also the battery might be at the end of its life?

Thirdly, remove the Lithium Date and Time battery at the same time you remove the camera battery, leave them out for 5 minutes and then replace and reset your camera.

If all this fails, and you are sure that your battery is in good order, then it is possible that the camera is simply failing in old age - in this case get a newer camera.

Additionally, it could be possible that there is a compatibility problem with the Tamron Lens and the EOS 300D, but I have not ever come across such an issue - the reverse is common OLDER third party lenses (commonly Sigma and Tamron) not being compatible with NEWER EOS DSLR Cameras.

There are no camera "settings" that you change to better accommodate this lens.

Probably a typo, yet for clarity - a "D300" is a Nikon Camera - this conversation is concerning an EOS 300D (Canon).

Correct, and conversely, if the lens works OK on another body, that suggests the 300D is nearing the end of life.
