I am srinavin kumar , have my under graduation in mechanical engineering from Tamil nadu, southern part of India, 2011 pass out . I completely left it and switched to photography , I am self learned photographer trying to create wonderful Image manipulations like never before, I also shoot street, travel , Landscapes which I love, But I want to expertise myself in conceptual/creative works. I have won a honorary mention in last year scott kelby photo walk(that's the only recognition). The sad part is I don't have any opportunities here in my place, People around me don't respect my work, I don't want to live in this place for sometime. Its been a while I got paid for a work. My parents are giving a little support so I am managing but I know its soon gonna stop. Whenever I tell people of what I am doing they are being sarcastic , they reply like " How can you make a living with what you do ? ", It hurts every time . All my friends just exploit my talent and use me for free to take their special occasion, events, facebook profile pictures :/.Even though I am almost burned out, I just couldn't give up ,I am just completely lost, I am bad at PR. I don't where to go , but I still carry my camera and keep shooting that's the only thing makes me happy. I am thinking about higher education not in some traditional photography courses, a mix of 3D modelling (I already know solidworks), Lighting (which I don't have the cash to experiment till now ). Apart from it, the reason why i seek a college is ,for a change of my lifestyle, a new positive place ,getting along and surrounded with wonderful Inspiring people who are in the same boat. All I need is a little push and support, then there's no stopping.

Srinavin, higher education in the arts can be your ticket to success, or you might sink deeper because of it. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone will be able to offer any more than what you already know about opportunities in your area and what it takes to make it in photography, except for words of encouragement.

On the other hand, you already have a mechanical engineering degree which should put you ahead (of photography) in terms of employment prospects; it's an option to consider that can serve to finance your interest in photography and allow you to postpone the decision of a career change to a time when you achieve financial stability.

The most successful photographers (and other artists in general) aren't necessarily the most creative or skilled, but are those who are the best salesmen and marketers of their work. So if you're wanting further education I would suggest learning marketing and sales techniques.

Here here... well said.

There are thieves in photography, and with the new Google abilities, they are being pointed out and shamed. One guy stealing other photos from on-line, making a small change to it and selling it for $100K in his studio. Most people don't have $5K to get a lawyer and sue him. So he continues. If you were from out of the US, double that bill to sue in the US.

It's marketing, know how, social networking.

If you could see the U.S. daytime TV show people, they don't have any special talent. Somehow they just got popular and got their own TV show for millions a year.

Friends using your talents for nothing.. when did that ever stop ?

But I hate to say it... back in the day nobody could play like Jimi Hendrix, not even close. Now you can see 10 year old shred a guitar and stretch their fingers to do his strange finger chords. Good singers are a dime a dozen, in any good bar band. Want to have a terrible concert life, most don't, so their incredible voices are only hears locally . Be able to handle a guitar like Eddie Van Hallen, there are 15 year old children that can now out-do him.

Meaning: your stuff is nice, but I can fine 1000 other people that can match or do better. And each will say they will do it cheaper !

I completely agree with you. But there are also those who manage to take good photos, but marketing and sales are not their element.
