Post processing Challenge for March 28, 2020

There are no rules as to how you apply your post processing to this image; but, please let us know what you have done so we can all learn.

If you would like to post a candidate image next week, please ensure it is of sufficiently high resolution for manipulation by the participants (3000px on the long side, 300dpi for example).

 

Most of all, let's have fun while we are learning or demonstrating how we use our post-processing software, imaginations and interpretations.

Thanks for hosting this week, Glenn. Great photo! I decided to show a bit more of the Tetons and substitute Bisons for cows. A bit more contrast in the clouds but not too heavy. It's a bit sloppy but I'm sure everyone gets the idea. FWIW, I spent most of this afternoon trying (in PS) to turn a 'portrait' photo into a 'landscape'. I was getting cross-eyed so your PP challenge came as a welcome relief!

 

Excellent selection, Glenn. I prepared two versions, the first of which is below.

 

 

Initially, seeing the extent of the cloud cover, my first thought was to use Define 2 (a NIK program) to eliminate noise. Then, in PSE15, I used levels to adjust the tonalities and then used the sponge tool to add saturation selectively.

 

 

Version 2 - - - My first step was to crop from the top edge. Then, I used one of the infrared film presets in Color Efex. Returning to PSE, I applied levels .

 

 

I used this image as a test for Luminar 4: I set AI Accent and AI Sky enhancer to 50; Landscape Enhancer to Golden Hour 50 masked to the field and water. In Photoshop, to remove the magenta cast in the sky, I converted the sky to B&W and then added a light blue layer in Color mode. Finally I removed the spots in the sky.

Part of the photo really caught my eye. I cropped in LR to try to use the irrigation equipment and bright green foliage as a line leading back into the image while maintaining the aspect ratio.

 

In On1 Photo Raw, I applied a landscape preset called Turbo Boost. Then I added the following effect filters in this order: HDR Look, Vignette (subtle) and Border (black square keyline). I must say that it was one of the fastest challenges that I have done. It took longer to type the steps;).

 

Glenn, beautiful landscape! Auto settings in LR, sent to PS to use Sharpen AI plugin, sent to Gigapixel AI x 6 to enhance resolution, reduced image size back to original in PS. Save and cropped it into a panorama attempt and ran it through mostly default settings in SNS-HDR bumping light up a little.

Here's another version, this time done in PS from the LR crop. I include the list of layers to give a sense of what I did. Needless to say, this took a bit more time than the On1 version I posted earlier.

 

 

Very nice image Glenn. I thought I would try a cooler version.

All work done in GIMP. First I cropped the image using the rule of thirds to get rid of some of the sky. Next I used the curves tool to brighten the mid tones. I then used a luminosity mask to add blue to the shadows. I then used a black to white gradient map to desaturate the image. Then I used the levels tool and a layer mask to brighten the middle of the image. Last i used a unsharp filter and a layer mask to sharpen the trees on the right side of the image.

One-More-Try in PS

I thought the bright patches (my perception) on the ground related to rays of light, so I added some via rendering clouds, using multiple radial blurs, the subtract blend mode (first time for that one) and a reduced fill (again, first time I used that). I also monkeyed with colour to try to make them warm rays of light. The layers used follow the image. I'm not excited about the result but here it is.
