Post-processing challenge for March 21, 2020

Recommended Posts

No-one else has posted so far so I'll take the initiative for this week. As always, there are no rules as to how you apply your post processing to this image; but, please let us know what you have done so we can all learn.

If you would like to post a candidate image next week, please ensure it is of sufficiently high resolution for manipulation by the participants (3000px on the long side, 300dpi for example).

Most of all, let's have fun while we are learning or demonstrating how we use our post-processing software, imaginations and interpretations.

Nice pick Mike thank you for posting.

I like this image very much and not a lot needed to be fixed.

First I cloned out the part of a man on the left edge and a small boat on the horizon to the right. I then used some luminosity mask and the color balance tool to bust a little color in the shadows, highlights, and mid tones. I used the curve tool to add a little contrast. Last I used an unsharpen mask to slightly sharpen the foreground area.

Another nice photo, Mike! Hmmm…hard to remember the steps on this version. It started in PS and went through a few changes that were negated by the end product. I think I plopped two different skies together from two different programs and then used a lot of graduated filters for exposure in ACR. There was also a little painting plus some burning in my mediocre attempt to control the light, both in the sky and on the water.

Adjustments done in a combination of LR & PSElements. Thought I would try it with less ships. Removed most of the right hand ship with LR Spot Removal tool. Transferred to PSE and used the Clone tool to remove the rest and adjust the sky in the area. Back to LR to finish with cropping, exposure colour balance a bit of dodge and sharpening.

Worldwide Shipping. I cropped the image to square dimensions, inverted the image, switched to polar coordinates in Photoshop CS5, which creates a "small planet" composition. Then I pasted a map of the world with a North Pole view in the center and adjusted the dimensions to fit.

Thanx once again for posting, Mike.

Two parts of the image really caught my eye.

First, I liked the mystery of the ship behind the bulk carrier so I cropped and messed with that part. Part of what I did was using the dehaze in the camera raw filter in PS and then I masked the bulk ship back to 'unhazed'. Because of the severe crop, I needed to use a lot of noise reduction.

I also Liked the symmetry of the cranes on the two ships. I decided to work on the container ship because of the steps in height of the cranes. I cropped and then used content aware scale to bring the little boat closer to act as a size point of reference. I added a gradient to darken the sky at the bow end and masked the ship to bring it back. I did some sharpening, noise reduction, etc and a selective colour adjustment to increase saturation.

Once again, thanx for posting, Mike!

Thanks for joining in again everyone! I love seeing how creative you are. I makes me see a photo in a whole new way. Glenn's 'Worldwide Shipping' took my breath away. Must try the PS polar coordinates sometime. I added some color to the sea and sky, brightened up the ships a touch, used PS 'warp' to simulate a crash and added an evil remote controller (C00 licence, sourced from pxfuel).
