Confused with Leica googles/lens set

I wasn't a leica guy but I did stumble onto a leica M3 with a bunch of accessories. The Camera has the 50mm lens on it. There is a odd shaped leather case with goggles and an attached 35mm lens. in that same case there is a strap with goggles that can be attached to a lens. My 50mm has that attachement. The Cylindrical case has a collapsible 90mm lens but this lacks that goggle attachment.

Excuse my ignorance concerning Leica. I go back too many decades to mention with Nikon and previously (stone age) Canon.

I never owned or used Leicas before.

The loose google seems to be for a telephoto, could be the 90 or a 135 that I don't own. Why does that case have the isolated goggle in addition to the 35mm set?

I have attached a shot of the two cases and contents.

Thanks for any help.

35mm came with goggles that should be / stay perma mounted to expand the M3's 50mm VF.

There used to be the Dual Range 50mm Summicron; it takes the loose set of goggles, for paralax correction, when you use it's close focusing range, between 1m and near end.

Why does that case have the isolated goggle in addition to the 35mm set?
Most likely because it had a suitable shape, to hold those too? - People might take their M3s out leaving that case at home.

The only goggles with telephoto are either an (older version of) extension tube for the more recent collapsible 90mm Macro Elmar. - The tube has fixed goggles. Or the 135/2.8 meant to work on M2 too, with goggles utilizing the 90mm VF frame lines.

Happy shooting & lots of joy with that vintage kit!

Yep, Jochen is right. And it appears you do have the dual range summicron (some say it's the best, and yours looks good - it was troubled with poor coatings). And I prefer googles to goggles. I have the dual range summicron and 35mm summaron with googles. For my M. I'll post a shot tomorrow. Use what you have. It looks a really good kit. Post your shots here. Regards, Arthur (apiarist1)

This is a DR 'cron. Pull distance ring out move it over the 1m mark, mount goggles, shoot closeups... I can't really comment on that lens, since it doesn't work 1m-to infinity on digitals. It took pictures on film and seemed flare prone on a Fuji. - I'd buy a vented Chinese aftermarket lens hood for it.

I wouldn't use close up lenses on an M. It is doable in despair but no real fun and I guess you have an SLR somewhere too?

Hi Robin. Not my kit, regrettably, but the OP's. Here is some of my kit. Not that I use them much nowadays, being enraptured with my monochrom and some 'antique' cameras.

Two M3's. one with the summaron with googles, and the other with the DR summicron, also with googles. The beater is an M2 with a 'massaged' (by a Ukrainian e-preyer) Russian 85mm lens. It works, would you believe. Owes more to zeiss than leitz. Regards, Arthur (apiarist1)

Poor photo: Nikon, thanks.
