Nikon Z6 & Metz 15 MS-1 Digital ring flash in wireless TTL

Recommended Posts

The above combination is supposed to work if I have a Z6-compatible flash in the hot shoe in Master mode. Not much choice here from Nikon for the time being, only the SB-500 or the much more expensive SB-5000.

I have the first one. It is definitely compatible with the Z6 because it can activate the flash-control in the camera menu (otherwise it would be grayed out and inoperable).

The Metz 15 MS-1 Digital is an older, clever little ring flash which can function either manually with a PC-cord or in wireless TTL mode with various makes of cameras, among others Nikon. The Master flash sends out infrared pulses to which the Metz reacts and fires TTL. It works perfectly with my Nikon D-750 (which has a built-in flash, so doesn't need the SB-500). It doesn't work with the new Z6 and the SB-500 Master.

Metz customer service told me, the Z6 or the SB-500 possibly have a firmware problem. When I suggested, it might as well be Metz, which has such a problem, I was told, Metz doesn't have a Z6 to test this out.

Has Nikon at some point made changes to their flash-communication protocol which the Metz 15 MS-1 now doesn't recognise?

Just to make this clear: the impulses by the Masterflash are are IR-optical, not radio waves.

Anybody a suggestion?

Andy
