It works or don't'. .that simple.

Labeling photos art and claiming they work or don't is simply another vacuous Internet shorthand like a LIKE.

Photos are much too rich to simply dismiss them as art or as working.

The photo in question of Jon's works for me because it has a kind of counterpoint to it, a push/pull emotional effect on me. The girl, whose hair is hiding her face, is almost kept from me, like a secret, except that I can make out her intent and interest in the animal, who's seemingly disinterested in both her and me at the moment. She hides in a corner, up against a wall, and is a sympathetic but withdrawn or even alienated figure in the photo. The photographer observes this publicly private moment.

I don't say any of this because I expect others to see it the same way, but just to describe at least a bit of what a photo can have in store for me, beyond merely calling it this or that.

Croissants are probably inferior to white bread if it’s sustenance you are after :)

Because bread was the point. Trouble with analogies is they distract from substance. Sorry I used one, since it was substance I was after, not bread types. Obviously, these days and here on PN, substance is not the thing. Post and like. Post and like.
