michaelmowery
You are correct in your thinking for solving problems BUT your statement that you can put a ND on the lens and it will make the same difference as putting a ND on a flash is incorrect. William Michael
Hello, I want to buy one strobe and (possibly) a beauty dish to begin taking portraits in a specific area left empty in my living room. . . . Just clarifying one point: an important point. Have you already bought a Studio Strobe? I ask because I previously suggested that you don't need to - a speedlite will suffice, and subsequently the same suggestion has been mentioned. Thanks, WW

That's not exactly what I said. I said "Also, an ND filter doesn't have to go over the lamp if flash is your only light source." The clause I've emphasised is highly relevant, and excludes use of flash together with ambient or continuous sources. Otherwise, I agree, fitting an ND over the lens doesn't have the same effect as attenuating only the flash.
michaelmowery
Your are right the words were there but it was not emphasized and I over looked it. For a newbie controlling just the flash is the easiest. I personally prefer to control all light sources independently as it just makes things much easier.
