Need advice for a multiply shoot.

Recommended Posts

I take pictures at a dance studio that my daughters has been going to for years (6). Last years, for the costume shoot i was given 30.00 an hour for about 5 hours a day, 5 days, About 750.00, that year i didn't have to do the editing or dropping the photos onto the USB drives of worry about prints. Year before that i did, and make about 1600.00 after i split it with the studio.

When i did the Dance Recital at the end of the month i was given an account credit for my daughter of 1800.00 for her winter dance season. Years before i wasn't paid.

This year, costume pics are the same price or i can choose to do the edits and we split the profits again. The recital though, she wants to pay me 100.00 er recital show, about 90 minutes long, with the exception of sunday which will be 3 & a half hours long. 5 shows. So 500.00 for the 2 days total.

I don't know what to do this time. Advise would be helpfull.

Thank you

Thank You,

Jeff

The problem is that you are doing this as a favor (since you know the studio and the owners) not as a job. This means that you are prone to being pushed around.

My first reaction is to suggest that you need to start making it one or the other, a job or a favor, and make your decision clear to the studio. If you want to make it favor, shoot it for nothing, turn over the unedited images and be done. If you want to make it a job, figure out how many hours it will require and how much you want to make an hour.

If you have been doing this for several years, wait until the see what it costs to get a photo studio to do this work.

So I am assuming she makes good money off the photos. If she is just doing it as a service to her recital parents you could tell her you will do them for free and post them on a site where the parents can buy the digitals strait from you and you will probably make good money.

She does obviously know your value and quality or she wouldn't be coming back again and again. If it's not worth your time just say no and see what she comes back with.

Good luck :)

I do CDs for a public high school orchestra free.

Then again, fairly often they ask for donations to support the expenses, which I don't do,

partly because of the service I supply.

I get to listen to the concert while recording, though. The actual CD making is pretty

fast, so maybe not comparable to photo editing. But if you just supply unedited files,

the time will be fairly small.

You don't say if the dance studio expects donations in addition to tuition.

Though maybe not comparable, as I am not a professional recording

engineer, but do it mostly because it is fun. Many other parents donate

time, such as selling donated snacks.

Just a note that the opening post was made 11th May and the opening poster has not logged in to the site since 13th May - I suspect that this year's dance photos are done and dusted.

There is always next year.

And it would be easier to charge after her daughter graduates.
