Please help Olympus XD card error?

Recommended Posts

My bf bought me a 1Gb Olympus Xd card for my olympus Fe-170 digi cam. I

inserted it and turned on my camera, alls good, it didnt come up with "format"

and nor did go to menu and format it as i didnt know i needed to.I took loads

of piccys and it was working fine, i could view etc all the pics i had taken

and i carried on snapping away! Then i thought i would transfer some of the

pics onto my computer, so i took the card out and inserted it into my card

reader, that does read XD cards, i clicked my comp, and the 4 card slots

loaded up i click the slot which my card was in but it just made my comp lock

for about 2mins then came up with something about I/O error? i took it out and

tried again and again, but nothing so i used the usb wire that came with the

camera and tried that but wen i turnt my camera on all i got was ONE MOMENT

and a orange light flashing i left it for about an hr and nothing happened. so

i gave up unplugged the usb cable and turnt on my camera to see the orange

little flashing and a blank screen, so now the card doesnt even work, i can

only use my camera when i remove the card and use the cameras memory! any

ideas greatly appreciated?

I found out the hard way using a 1gb xd card on a fuji camera. It's probably best to format the card in your camera. You will lose any images you have already taken. If your card reader is more than a year old, it may not read 1gb xd cards. Once you format the card you should be able to read it through your camera when attached to your computer via usb.

Good Luck

Hey all, I'm having the same issue with a 512MB card... Please let me know if you come up with a fix; I'd love to get this thing working again...

To recap, neither my computer nor my camera will recognize the xD card (in fact, neither device will even boot at all when the xD card is in!) so I can't reformat it. I tried wiping the contacts with rubbing alcohol as well but that didn't work. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If the memory card is not recognized in the PC or it is impossible to access the data on it, the controller on the card is damaged. There is only one way to get the data back, unsolder memory chips and directly access their raw data with a programable chip reader. Software can't help, that is a physical damage! Have a look at: http://card-recovery.biz/us/service.php

I had a similar issue with my VR-340. I tried formatting both through the GUI and Command Line, I tried FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT. Apparently some Olympus camera's don't like it if you format the card on a windows machine:

Ask Olympus: Tips about memory card usage

"Memory cards should be formatted to maintain top performance. They should only be formatted using the camera - never format using a computer as it may render the card unreadable by the camera."

The issue seems to be related to how windows partitions the drive, to fix it;

1. Run cmd.exe as Administrator

2. Type "Diskpart" and press Enter

3. Type "List Disk" and press Enter

4. Once you've identified the correct disk type "Select Disk X" where X is the disk number and press Enter

5. Type "List Partition" and press Enter

6. There should only be one partition, type "Select Partition X" where X is the Partition number and press Enter

7. Type "Delete Partition" and press Enter

8. Type Exit and transfer the SD card to the Camera

9. Format the card with the camera (may take a few tries) and it should work fine.

There is software which will salvage data unless it is totally fried. If your computer will recognize the card, even if it is corrupted, there is a chance of recovery. Often it is the file directory at fault, and software can often bypass the FAT on the card. I have used EasUS recovery software to salvage data on bad or reformatted memory cards and hard drives. It's the best $80 I've spent. Unlike most recover software, EasUS restores the original file name and directory structure.
