W/NW Pic-O'-The-Week #38

Recommended Posts

They are good billblackwellphotography. Your control of contrast and tonal gradation is something to be envied. And incredibly consistent/persistent. How you do it, beggars my mind.

A couple of shots from our holidays the week before last. Monochrom and my go to lens, 75mm. The next two, Jan and I went to a public meeting here in Wingham convened by Rural Australian for Refugees to showcase Mark Isaacs' new book 'The Kabul Peace House', with presentations by our local community choir. His book is about an intentional community which currently operates in Kabul. This time the monochrom with a relatively antique LTM (with adapter) elmar 9cm f4. All with ramped up ISO.

Mark Isaacs, the author. His time in Kabul was, he said, auspiced by the Edmund Rice Centre, a human rights advocacy group here. I must say, as an aside, intentional communities have a long history, usually religiously based (eg. the monastic movement), sometimes organised around ideological, or other boundaries. Most have been built around charismatic personalities, and relatively short-lived. Mark did not address this in his presentation. Nonetheless, it was an encouraging presentation, and gave hope that, though it may take decades, peace may come to that part of the world.

And a short shot of the choir. They did six short, multinational songs. They were good.

The elmar is good, but I'm toying with buying a voigtlander 90mm apo lanthar (LTM) which I can get reasonably priced, and can use with an adapter.

FWIW, I owned a 90mm Apo Lanthar briefly not long ago and, while its performance was pretty good, I was disappointed with the quality control (pretty shoddy to be quite honest). I got rid of it in favor of a 90mm Leitz Rokkor designed for the CL/CLE for about the same amount of money. The Rokkor QC is much better (Leica standards, I would say); image quality isn't quite as good compared to the CV LTM stop-to-stop, but it suits my needs as a portrait lens.

But it seems to me the Elmar works just fine. Seeing what I see I probably wouldn't replace it.

Rick_van_Nooij, You've been using the 7Artisans lens over the last few weeks. And they have been good shots. How have you found it. What is your feedback. I bought it, attracted by the sonnar design.

Allancobb, that's spectacular. Native colour?

Uhooru, tell me more about LA Noir. They are good shots, but where do they sit in the story of LA Noir. And, its good to see your shots.

Allen Herbert, yes, previously posted, and welcolm again. It is such a good shot. What was it called? The decisive moment? I would like to know the story behind your photo: shoes off, outside a door with a padlock, and door bolt.

Hi Arthur, yes it is; the glaciers grind the underlying rock to form “rock flour” which runs into the lake and most others like it in the region, giving them their distinctive aqua color, quite amazing!

I do have the CV 90mm App. I don't use it very often, but I think its a nice lens, especially for the price.

Apologies for the late reply, I've been gallivanting through Belgium and the Netherlands since the start of September.

I find the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 to be a good lens but with some small annoyances.

Overall sharpness at apertures smaller than f/1.4 is good to very good. At f/1.1 - f/1.2 the sharpness isn't quite there.

Corner sharpness (or lack there off) is something people have had trouble with. I've noticed it but have not found it to be a problem for my 'style' of photography.

On the M-E it feels like it is throwing off the light meter quite a bit with its near-night-vision ability to gather light.

It will gladly give you much higher shutter speeds like 1/2000th of a second on Aperture priority if only a small section of bright blue sky is showing.

You'd expect it to give major underexposure in the shadow areas of those photos, but I've had to do relatively few tweaks in post-processing.

Overall it's a solid lens with some very nice high speed glass.
