Card Reader Problem

Hi All,

 

I have a Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot reader https://www.lexar.com/portfolio_page/professional-usb-3-0-dual-slot-reader/

 

When I plug it into the port of my HP Spectre x360 15” laptop, I first need to remove the Logitech dongle for my wireless mouse. This disconnects the mouse and forces me to use the touch screen to select images to transfer from my SD card into the proper folder on the laptop. Once done transferring, I can remove the reader and plug the dongle back in to use the mouse again. I find this extremely inconvenient.

 

How can I plug in the reader and keep the dongle inserted at the same time?

Try putting all the photos into one folder and go from there. Did it always act like this?

I've just started using it. My temporary solution is to use the touch screen to select and move all the photos at once into one picture folder on the C drive and then reinstall the mouse for further editing. Still looking for a permanent solution. My HP Spectre has the following ports - 1: USB-A, 2:USB-C (Thunderbolt), 1: HDMI and 1: Micro SD.

Is your problem that the reader and the dongle both need to use the USB A port on the computer or do you mean the reader won't work if the dongle is also plugged in to the computer? If your problem is the former, then you can get a USB A to USB C adapter and use that to plug the reader into one of the USB C ports. If your problem is the latter then I have no idea how to fix that.

Do you need to remove the mouse dongle because you only have 1 USB port? Or is there a driver / technical issue?

 

If it's because of one port, Google "USB hubs" or "Thunderbolt to USB hubs", being sure to match the port type you have available. You may also be able to go "Thunderbolt to SD" or "Thunderbolt to CF" for the same amount of money.

Yes, the cable that comes with the reader and the dongle both need to use the only USB A port that is built into the laptop; the dongle works fine. I'll research the adapters you mention.

In that case you could simply replace the cable with one that has the appropriate type of USB plug on the reader end and a USB C plug on the computer end. Then you wouldn't have to bother carrying an extra adapter or hub around.

Ok, so I found the following adapters and need to know which one to get; would either one work?

fb - I think either of those would work, but both only give you one port.

 

This device would allow you to use your memory card reader AND leave 3 additional USB ports for that next device you need to connect. Not pushing that brand or that vendor, but I have a similar device on my desk at home, not because of limited ports, but because it is easier than crawling under the desk to connect devices. I often have 2 or more connected at the same time: card reader, thumb drive, USB headphones and phone charger.

Not all USB 2 cables are the same. Those designed for data transfer (needed in this case) use all 4 or 5 pins and often have pull-up resistors in one of the connectors. Use the cable supplied with the card reader as a first choice. Any substitutes should be no longer than absolutely necessary. Some USB cables are intended for charging power, and may not work reliably for data transfer,

 

Card readers require a substantial amount of power. Consider using a USB hub with external power. This will also let you use other USB devices simultaneously. The hub should be rated for the highest data rate in your gear, in this case, USB 3. I have good service from 10 port USB 3 hubs from Anker (see below). For convenience in mobile use with USB C ports (MacBook Pro), I use multi-port hubs by HooToo, which have HTML and an optional card reader.
