robstraatman
Hey everyone! For my first 35mm camera the ae-1 program. I have the 50mm but now I have the choice to pick up either the 50mm macro fd with adapter and the 70-210 fd. Both for 70 euros. Wich is the better deal? I know they are used for very different things but I want to get both in the long run. Any advice will be much appreciated.
AJG
Which is more important to you--getting small objects to fill the frame at a close distance (50 mm macro) or being able to capture images at a distance (70-210)? If you answer that question then which lens to get is obvious.

adam-smith
Canon FD 70-210mm would be best for your photography.
rodeo_joe1
IMO, doing macro photography with film is just a waste of time, when a DX digital camera can do it so much better and easier. If you're serious about seeing the detail in tiny things, then that's the way to go. Get the tele-zoom.
mikemorrell
Hi Rob, You have other replies to the same question in the Canon FD forum. A couple suggest that you might be able to pick up the 70-210mm more cheaply. From what I've seen, the price ranges quoted (including shipping costs) seem optimistic. Both lenses are offered on E-bay so that should give you some idea of the (average) market value. But buying on E-bay also incurs shipping costs which can run up to almost 50% of the price of the lens. From your name, you might perhaps live in NL (as do I). If so, 'marktplaats' is a good place to look too. From what I see there, the 50mm macro lenses offered are generally more expensive (100-150 euros) than the 70-210 mm lens (+/- 40 euro's). So in terms of 'value for money', the 50mm macro is probably the better deal. Please check and verify this yourself! I've done no more than a cursory scan of E-bay and 'Marktplaats'. If you can avoid shipping costs, so much the better! Hope this helps, Mike
Karim Ghantous
If the zoom lens has a constant aperture, I would go for that. Some photographers don't use lenses longer than, say, 90mm. Some need them up to 600mm. If you don't really need 200mm, maybe get the 50mm macro. Personally I could not do some jobs without a telephoto zoom. I would also buy a relatively inexpensive extension tube (if you can find one) to use with your 50mm lens that you already own.
