Eye-AF Issues with Z 6

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else is having Eye-AF issues with the Z 6 camera + FTZ adapter and F-mount lenses? I have unsuccessfully used the eye-detection on:

  • Nikon 24 1.4,
  • Nikon 16-35 f4
  • Nikon 70-200 f4
  • Nikon 85 1.4

For whatever reason, my Nikon 50mm 1.4 does seem to work. Just wondering if anyone has also had these issues with non S lenses? I contacted Nikon and I was told to try cleaning the lens mounts. I've yet to do that, but plan to see if that affects it.

The issue is simply the Eye-AF won’t engage. It stays locked in the face detect mode, even if I’m close to the subject. On the 50mm, it can detect the eye and switches to that mode pretty quickly. I’ve been traveling the last few days, but I intend to try cleaning the lens mounts soon in order to see if that’s the source of my issue.

I’m just surprised since I wouldn’t consider any of my lenses to be dirty at all.

Can you elaborate on what the actual issue is? I am doing very well with the feature on all three Z bodies and all my F and Z mount glass.

I actually figured it out with the help of a new Nikon representative. What I had mistakenly done was engaging Subject Tracking AF - which I would engage by hitting the OK button while in the Auto Area AF mode. For some reason, I thought the white box was how you started the focus system - believing it would grab the eye at the right distance - but alas it wouldn't - it would just track the body.

To solve my issue - they had me hit the "zoom out" button which brought it back to the main screen view on the LCD and I just let it grab the face on it's own and it worked perfectly. I can't believe it took me this long to figure it out. :( Anyway, happy that it's not a defect with my camera - it's a defect in the user. :)
