Once more into the breach, me hearties!

Recommended Posts

I probably shouldn't open my mouth, but...

I was unaware of the Photos of the Week, and have just looked at it for the first time. The '15 anonymous judges' seem to have liked a lot of the same stuff again and again, don't they? It seems like it must have been automatically shortlisted on the basis of traffic, leading to a bias toward very dramatic pictures; like Flickr's 'interestingness'.

I don't think Photo.net has 15 anonymous judges on the staff now. If you want a POTW, I think your best bet is to organise something yourself in the fora; in fact, there are several threads a bit like a POTW: Canon Thursday, Canon FD P-O-T-Month, Mirrorless Monday, etc. So people will submit pictures; you would need to add the judging; hard to make that anonymous, but you might have three or four volunteer judges (I guess this week's judge either doesn't submit, or submits for fun, and there's a rule that the judge can't win).

The whole notion of 15 " elves" selecting a potw is a throwback from the glory days prior to the current halfwits who now run this site. My guess is that presently the number of staff running PN is somewhere between zero and none. Before all normal activity from management ground to a halt, there was a long period where the potw selections were so similar week to week that they were most likely selected by the same person. Judging by how lame the choices were, I'm going to guess they were selected by Glenn. Even when a new selection has been posted, other than Michael, there is not much in the way of comments anyway. I think Dustin has a great suggestion DIY. While the doors are still open and clearly nobody is home in management, if you want something done you are going to have to do it yourselves. There is an opportunity here to work with this platform while it still exists. Complaining to management is in my opinion a waste of energy. They no longer even pretend to give a rat's ass about what happens around here.

No need to insult anyone - the site is what it is, and will be till something changes.

Here is a suggestion I made in a conversation with Admin back in May.

Apparently someone chose one of each recently, but a rare happening. I do not know the capabilities of the software, but I had a couple of ideas. If there is a duration, Day or Week, first post starts the race - most votes by Day (Week) end is the winner. Announced under Conversations or New category as below. Or same two possibilities (I think Week would be the one to start with as trial) Moderators vote /elect winner - conversations in the moderator forum, then the picture copied over and winner announced under a New general category - POTD / POTW.

And here is one today.

Members can easily initiate and operate at least POTW - all posts to a weekly POTW submitted on a Monday - votes or likes thru Friday most votes or likes wins. Announce winner the following Monday to start the next cycle. Done.

Dustin, you make some interesting suggestions. Perhaps there can be a panel of members, each of whom can submit, for example, 3 images. The panel as a whole then would select the POTW.

I think Michael is just fishing for another POTW award.

HaHa, Ludmilla? :D Only one of my images ever was selected as a POTW and most of the discussion (which was fairly substantial) was in the form of criticism. Some of it was somewhat harsh, but the balance was quite constructive and I learned from it.

Sadly, I sent a private message to PN logo I believed to be Glenn's. I haven't received a hint of response. Although I may think that Gordon's message might, to repeat, might a wee bit too strong (not to me), its content demands attention by Admin.

All this nonsense about winners and likes is in direct contradiction to the entire point of the potw forum. This odd mindset is how we arrived at having such poor choices that nobody wants to have a discussion about the chosen images.

Frankly, like so many things - a rational suggestion for a work around under less than ideal conditions. Write it and execute it anyway you want to - not something I have an interest in participating in.

Sandy I get that you're not interested, I'm not sure that I would be either. If someone wanted to run with this they would only have to select an image that they think would be worth discussing and then start a thread with some sort of preamble to kickstart a discussion. I would suggest touching bases with the person whose photo is selected. People could take turns offering up images to discuss. This same idea has worked for the folks that participate in the digital darkroom thread each week.

Disclaimer - I have never had any issues with 'Admin' or anyone else responsible for this site.

It does seem to me that there are in effect two issues here - when a polite request or suggestion is made, nothing happens.

However, when a more forceful approach is used, for someone to get their point across more strongly - there is no activity.

Any thoughts, anyone ?

Tony, I don't really have any thoughts on why Admin seems to pay so little attention to members' concerns. The fact that Admin doesn't respond not only to threads posted in site help, but also those sent by Internal Message is inexplicable.

Gordon, I totally agree. Like so many images posted for critique, most discussion on both POTD and POTW images has been reduced to fluff.

If the elevator doesn't come after you have pressed the call button numerous times, the choices are to remain or use the stairs.

To some of the members (after reading the comments), it seems like the elevator is stuck in the middle of two floors, with people in it, and lights out :-).

And, there may very well be some creature lurking on the stairs who just wants your wallet ... or easy access to your photos!
