s_duncan
So clearly a very graphic stark style and edit. This was lit by torchlight in one exposure with contrast and saturation boosts only with small minor branches and grass removed. Lit at night on a hillside with one spotlight at an angle to bring out the most contrast and detail. Does this style overpower the subject or is the dark sky too dominant or does this style suit the graphic nature of the subject?
samstevens
The lighting and style work. Could it have been shot from a more interesting/dynamic angle? Also, less black sky might help, since it doesn’t make it more stark or add much scale or perspective. "You talkin' to me?"
dcstep
I love the form and use of black, with the contrast between the live and dead. I feel that there's a little too much negative space, but I'm undecided, since it adds a lot of tension to the overall impact. Moving it around on my screen, to block some of the negative space, I'm liking a 2:1 crop a lot. Trying to imagine my opinion if it were printed large. There's a green tint to the dried grass and dead wood, that I'd try to remove.
Sandy Vongries
You might consider taking it monochrome, increasing the contrast a bit and experimenting with crops that focus on the primary object. Brief experimentation in those directions were interesting, IMO.
DavidTriplett
+1 to all the above. For me, given the lack of any but the primary subject, that subject needs to be more fully engaged, developed, and expressed.

Tony Parsons
I like it as it stands, for its implications as much as the subject and technical issues. Is it protecting against whatever may come from the darkness ? Is it the entrance to some creature's lair ? Has it fallen - or is it rising ? The lighting suits it, I feel, and adds to the air of uncertainty, and possible menace.
