Film Latitude

Recommended Posts

I am taking my Retina IIIc to Europe and will buy film at my first stop. (I don't want to expose the film to needless airport scans in the USA. The camera store near my first stop offers a limited selection of B+W film. For max latitude would you select: Fomapan 100, HP4+, or Rollei RPX 100?

In 2004, I never saw any place selling film in Berlin. I was glad I had brought my own C/N film (an experiment for me, having always shot slide film, immediately after I got back I bought my first dSLR).

In 2015, I never saw any film at all offered for sale in northern India.

I'm sure somebody still sells film, but 'drugstores' and such that are easily accessible don't seem to do so any more.

You could be like Elaine in Seinfeld (LINK), combing stores for their last box of film.

Look at their characteristic curves. They will tell you which one has more latitude.

Both Ilford HP5+ and FP4+ have generous latitude. Unless you know in advance of film sellers at places you will visit, you might just want to take some film with you. Maybe the airports will inspect by hand rather than x-ray. Just don't put the film in checked baggage.
