Why do some forum members hide their postings?

Recommended Posts

When I click on some people's posting I get the message: "Error; this member limits who may view their full profile."

Are they ashamed of what they say here or what?

Often wondered that myself - my current theory is that they are members of the 'Security Forces' (of whatever nation), looking for dissidents, intransigents - or just people who think for themselves.

There is a secret box that appears when you block access to your profile. You can put your reasons there, and it goes into the profile, but no one can see it.

Honestly, I don't like the fact that PN shows where on the site I was last seen. It bothers me, but not very much. If it bothered me more, I would block access to my profile and not give it another thought.

I’m not sure you can actually hide your postings. I think you can only hide that particular list of postings. I may click on a name and not be able to see any postings when I click on the POSTINGS link. But I can go to the main forum page, click on SEARCH and type that name into the Posted By Member box and get a list of their postings. I can click them to be taken directly to their posts. This undermines any privacy the member thought he had when he chose that privacy preference in his account preferences and may lessen the concerns of those who want unfettered access to what other members are doing.
There’s always something new under the sun.

Hmm. I don't remember encountering this in my day-to-day browsing on P.net.

am I just missing it? that is, not doing whatever it is that triggers the response?

or have I just had a prolonged senior moment?

curious, or a little paranoid, people want to know
