This forum's moderators are allowing up to three Nikon Wednesday images per week, so share some work! I finally got around to getting my state's required new driver's license (so it's compliant with the federal Real ID standards). I was surprised to see, when it showed up in the mail, that they'd opted to put my grim looking (hey, two hours in line at the MVA will do that to you) mug shot on the front of the license in black and white. It's the 21st century! Where's the color? Ah! Flip it over, and there's a small inset color version of the image, so they can see skin tone and hair color. Or at least, that's the theory. I'm glad to see they've recorded the fact that I'm a proud Pistachio-American. Let's see some nice images on this Nikon Wednesday. I'm hoping you have your color workflow in better shape than the Motor Vehicle Administration does! Deliberately shot with shallow DoF for obvious reasons, with a D810 and a 105mm macro. It's the 21st century! FWIW, for my UK driver's licence I stood in front of a booth that clearly contained a dSLR, and the result was definitely monochrome. I don't know why, other than having no faith in their colour reproduction abilities (given the number of other security features I assume they don't have microscopic colour watermarking going on). Makes me tempted to send them an infrared shot next time and see whether they notice... I'm about to shoot a passport photo for my wife - they have (and I swear they didn't before, so maybe they're learning) a 10MB limit, but I'll have fun testing their workflow for resolution. Typically the weather in Antarctica is highly unpredictable with plenty of overcast and rainy/snowy days. We had surprisingly great weather with plenty of sun during my two weeks there. John Di Leo Posted March 13, 2019 Share Posted March 13, 2019 For the past 2+ weeks it has been the Mardi Gras season here, all shots with d810, various ISOs, 24-70/2.8, sometimes with on-board fill-in flash, set at -0.7. It ended precisely at midnight Ash Wednesday. On the "neutral ground" of Napoleon Ave awaiting the first parades of the season, a soon-t0-be reveler, a painted utility box and a horse's ass. I usually don't shoot much of the parades proper, finding the individuals more entertaining...This guy's been reading too much Kafka. Mardi Gras day in the French Quarter. Local high schools participate, marching/dancing a 5 mile parade route through the city sometimes as much as 5 consecutive nights. Parades go through residential streets as well as wide avenues and boulevards. It's not like Hollywood portrays. At all. We shudder at the depiction. Here is seen Magazine Street which is mostly residential around here, Families and locals, in the know, seek out the smaller tighter areas to view. The marching groups, high school, college and locals, are usually the crowd favorites, lots of bopping and dancing in the crowds. By far it's the biggest holiday season of the year down here. Mardi Gras is a huge equalizer here, and keeps us relatively sane for the rest of the year. Still can't safely backpack my SLR gear, so using an old CoolPix P7100 for now. Rather envious of the red-dot brigade I saw last week taking a phototour of Lisbon (am I allowed to say that?), but such a drastic sudden equipment switch is beyond my means. Anyway, I felt that subject trumped technical considerations, so I'm posting my choices here. Converted to b&w in Affinity, via Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.
