Film Camera Week for February 8

Recommended Posts

First roll of film from my Leica M6/Voightlander 35mm f2.5 lens and Kodak UltraMax400. The camera is a gift from my oldest son. The photo is of some old Army Barracks Fort Ord Ca. which is now CSUMB (Monterey). I did basic there back in 67.

I did basic and AIT Jan-June 1967 H-1-3 sure looks run down.

I arrived at Fort Order in early September 1963. . spent 4 nights in those drafty & cold wooden structures. Got lucky & did the rest of basic from one of the concrete monsters up on The Hill. Aloha, Bill

But, Bill they were air conditioned as I remember ( could be wrong, long ago). Had to drink Vodka till daybreak with Drill sargent Taylor and look at his EAR collection. That man was f_____ up. 3 tours in Nam. Those were the days.

I was housed in the Concrete Barracks at Fort Ord. Not sure if they are still there or not. . Maybe the first week was in the wooden barracks but it's hard to remember. I do not remember my Drill Sergeant's name but he was nice enough. I think he only spoke to me one time during the entire thing that I remember. We had the Meningitis thing so we could not go anywhere for the entire basic training. The buildings are run down, graffiti, all the windows smashed, doors knocked out. Seems like they should tear them down but have no clue what is up with that or if the Government owns the property or it belongs to the College. Nobody around the buildings and none of it's posted keep out. You could walk around inside if you wanted to but I figured it looked like maybe the floors would cave in so I did not. I did live in Wooden Barracks just like these on Sand Hill, Ft Benning for over a year. They had coal furnaces and no air conditioning. During the summer it was full body sweat pretty much all the time.
