New Texas User

My name is David Wills. I joined a few days ago and have only posted a few photos to my profile so far. My wife and I are traveling the country one weekend at a time for our honeymoon. So far we have been to Salt Lake City, San Diego, and Louisville. I was introduced to photography as a kid by my father. He grew up shooting and developing his own film. He carried his camera with him most road trips and taught me what he could on the side of the road shooting old buildings and barns. I did not pick photography back up after he passed until high school. I took a class and bought a Nikon D60. I played around with it for awhile until I got tired of being embarrassed for carrying it around my college campus. I recently picked it back up while on vacation in Alaska last summer. I got bit by the bug pretty hard and decided to upgrade my camera to a D5500 with a 35mm prime lens. I have been shooting quite a bit, exploring my hometown as well as each of our adventures. Most of what I am shooting these days is street/architecture with a little bit of landscape and portraits (when my wife is feeling up for it) thrown in. I hope to do more landscape stuff this spring when the bluebonnets bloom here in Texas. I'm still learning composition techniques but have fairly mastered exposure (I did have a hard time shooting the eclipse). I'm here to join a community of serious, like-minded individuals who can help me learn and grow as a photographer outside of counting likes on Instagram. I will be adding more pictures to my profile as I have the time and ask for constructive criticism regarding both exposure and composition.

Welcome. I live in Austin, Texas. Bluebonnets are up in my region of Texas.

Thank you, Bill! I live in Dallas and have family in Ennis. I even proposed to my wife in a bluebonnet field there last year. I am hoping to make it down closer to Austin this year. Where do you recommend that isn't too crowded? Most of the Ennis Bluebonnet trail is packed.

I am retired from Texas Instruments and spent many years in Dallas. Moved to Austin 7-years ago to be closer to family. I volunteer at Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center and serve as their owl docent / photographer. The same Great Horned Owl has nested above entrance for the past 9-consecutive years. She is now sitting on eggs and we will see baby owlets in April.

 

This will be a good year for bluebonnets because of all the rain we have had. The best place in Texas for Bluebonnets is Willow Loop in Hill Country. Google it for directions. Ennis is good & I have been there as well. Let me know if you visit the Wildflower Center in Austin.
