Monday in Nature Guildelines

Shun will not be available to initiate this thread for a few weeks. He asked me to fill in to get things going each Monday until he is once again able to start it. I'm looking forward to seeing what he brings back!

Meanwhile, here's a beaver swimming in Lake Temiskaming. There is an interesting history of how 25 breeding pairs of beavers were relocated to Patagonia in the hopes of stimulating the local economy at the southern end of South America. Now there are over 200,000 of them and they are decimating the landscape because the vegetation is not able to regrow as quickly as the poplars and aspens do in the northern hemisphere. There is a bounty out on the beavers and hopes are that the population will be decreased by 100,000 or more.

Note this beautiful coyote in Yellowstone is proudly wearing a pine needle on its chest, which was not taken out as the PSA nature definition does not support add/remove of pictorial content.

It's not a nice day on Vancouver Island, hummingbirds and snow, a lot of snow are not a good combination. Have been kept busy the past couple days shoveling white stuff and making sure the bird feeder isn't frozen or covered in snow. Am always amazed that such a tiny creature can survive in these conditions.

PuntaColorada, thanks for starting the threads.

Two royal penguins follow the lead of a king penguin, which is much taller and has brighter yellow patches. Royal penguins are only found on land on MacQuarie Island in sub-Antarctic Australia. On the other hand, king penguins nest on a number of islands around the sub-Antarctic, such as South Georgia, the Falklands, ... and MacQuarie.
