Camera Lens cap...for the whole lens

I take my eos lenses skiing occasionally. Sometimes on sled trips in the mountains. Its winter here 1/2 the year and 1/2 of that time it is snowing and 1/2 of that time its snow around 0 so it melts when it hits you.

I use film usually when its really cold (I have an older eos 620) or a 5d classic when its warmer and the conditions are a bit tamer. I dont always pay too much attention to where I am putting it and snow always gets on the lens with the cap off, sometimes melts, then things get annoying.

The tiny little squeezing lens caps are difficult to use with gloves, and im usually all layred up, or have ski poles, or its cold, and I just generally dont want to take off my gloves.

In situations like this I just set my camera to auto mode and press the button.

does anyone know of just a large cap that you could just push on over the end of the entire lens? Could put it on or off with heavy gloves on.

This I guess is not really a huge problem, but it annoys me every time. Need to have a string to keep it connected to the camera as well. Maybe I could just sew one out of leather and a sinch cord at the end or something.

Just an idea I had.

Nikon lenses come with a dandy little drawstring bag with a flat bottom - opening to the camera, insert lens, pull the strings to tighten and it might do the trick. There are also a variety of neoprene cases by Tenba and Ruggard - the major retailers carry them - they would be similar but likely water resistant.

Depending on the lens hood, you might be able to find a large push on style lens cap that would go over the lens hood rather than capping the lens itself. I have caps like that for most of the prime lenses that I use on my Contax III and IIIa lenses. B&H carries Schneider push on caps in a wide variety of sizes which work well in my experience and don't cost an arm and a leg.

oh, those press on caps are perfect. I think I would like to put one over a deep lens hood, this way the lens element it would still be out of the falling/blowing snow somewhat when off, but then would cover the entire hood and lens when on. What I also need is to have it attached to the camera lens mount, but I think I can fashion that part myself with some paracord and a small hole :)

thank you

That is a great idea. Got me thinking about other such things, maybe a shower cap, modified to a smaller diameter?

Another idea - I think it was JDM? Measure what size cap you need and look for products at the grocery store that that have plastic caps to keep products fresh after opening - Mixed Nuts, coffee, lemonade, stuffing mix, etc. All you'd need is the measurement and a small ruler along at the store.

Somebody makes a sort of a foam lens "snood" with elastic. I even have one, but can't find it nor even picture of it.

Drink powder lids and such could be adapted with foam to hold on.

Some of my best accessories come from the grocery store. They must wonder what I am doing trying lids on some massive lens.

OP/TECH USA makes a slip-on neoprene "Hood Hat" that fits over the end of the lens with lens hood attached. I have several in different sizes and they work great.

They also make a Lens Sleeve which can be used in combination with the Hood Hat, to cover the rest of the lens.

Snow, especially powder, won't stick if the lens is at ambient temperature, preferably 20F or lower. Otherwise, action cams would be nearly useless. I suggest using a filter, which you can feel comfortable brushing with your glove when needed, plus a lens hood to shield the lens from indirect contamination. If you must remove something to take a photo, (a) you won't take as many photos, and (b) you'll need a replacement after nearly every run. If you keep the entire camera under cover, try using a rain shell, which won't allow the camera to get warm enough to melt the snow.
