mark45831
My Umbrella's are about 43" but sometimes they are too big for the area im shooting in, Would a Soft Box eat too much of the light up? I have seen umbrellas as small a 20", Too small? My set up is with SB-800's with a D750. any suggestions? Thanks

michaelmowery
One generally chooses size of light shaper based on how much they want to soften or harden the light quality on their subject.
heimbrandt
A smaller lightsource placed close to your subject gives a light equally soft to a larger lightsource placed further away. Can you place your light closer without it beeing in the way in your shot? Have you tried placing your umbrella slightly closer to your flash or collapsing it just a bit to make it smaller? Spill light can be a problem with umbrellas, but there are spill kills that you can attach to umbrellas. Generally speaking, getting a softbox is a good idea. They are highly versatile light shapers.
