Hello everyone,

I'm about to purchase my first mirrorless/Sony camera ever and am looking at using Commlite adapter for my existing Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G.

Just wondering if anyone has used the particular system A7iii with Commlite V06 with Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED and if you could please share some opinions about the system?

The lens is listed as 'Compatible' on CommLite's official website, but i'm just wondering if someone could please share some insights :)

Cheers

Commelite was the pioneer for auto focus Nikon F lens to Sony E-mount adapters. I have a Fotodiox adapter with similar features. AF is only possible with AF-S lenses (perhaps others with built-in motors). However there is a wide range of other features, including aperture setting for most lenses, including electronic apertures. Sometimes the connection is spotty, possibly due to wear on lenses up to 18 years old.

Adapters are an interim solution for those with legacy lenses, buying into a mirrorless system. You quickly find that native lenses work best, and have the best image quality. Sony has about 70 native lenses, including Zeiss, excluding a growing array of third party versions. Nikon has 4 native lenses, with the promise of another 4-5 in the upcoming year. There are other differences too, but Sony has a 5 year head start, and no internal battles with a DSLR division to slow development.

The adapter will allow you to set the aperture with the front dial for AIS, AF-D, AF-S, G and E Nikkor lenses. The aperture value is displayed in the viewfinder.and recorded in EXIF data. Manual focusing will not engage focus magnification, but that's easy enough to do by programming one of the A7's buttons. I don't use focus peaking, because it is inaccurate and distracting, but the EVF in the A7iii is good enough for manual focusing without aids - far better than a DSLR. Nothing beats focus magnification for precise work. The magnification is done pre-EVF, so there's no pixelation, even at 12x.

I use a Commlite lens adapter on my Sony A7 to use my Nikon lenses on the Sony. I have had good success with an AF-S (with AF) and with AF-D and chipped AIS (no AF) lenses. I do have a problem with chipped AI lenses. Sine AI lenses don't expose properly from the camera dial, I used the 60 option to program the Dandelion for using the lens aperture ring. I did the programming on a Nikon D600. The change worked fine on the D600. The problem was when I tried the lens on the A7IIR and Commlite. The aperture could be set with the camera dial, but not the lens aperture ring. The AI lenses are not going to provide accurate exposure from the camera dial as has been pointed out on many sites. Anyone had (or hopefully solved) this problem?

I haven't tried the Commlite adapter, but I have a Fotodiox Fusion adapter, Nikon to Sony camera, which works extremely well. It not only has autofocus for AFS lenses, the aperture for all lenses, including E lenses, can be set using dials on the camera body.

The Commlite adapter was not available (or I didn't see it) at the time. It is more expensive than the Fotodiox and appears to be a good choice.
