So what about Tripods in a high ISO World?

Replying to Ed's quote ...

In NYC tripods are allowed on most public footpaths as long as they do not impede pedestrian traffic. (Ha! -but tried walking on a busy 5th Ave.?)

So I try not to get in the way and use these rigs at busy locations.

As I tend to shoot a lot of timelapse and multi-exposure image sequences I need to have a fixed camera.

Times Square is an official no go for setting up a tripod - but depending on the attitude of the cops, they will sometimes let you finish or tell you to cease and desist.

There are numerous spots: scaffolding, street sign posts, guard rails etc. to rig a camera.

I use a a ball head on a lighting clamp - sometimes attached to a large G-clamp if needed.

I don't know why it is but my tripods are my favorite pieces of photo equipment, and as essential to my photography as my camera and lens. About the only time I don't shoot from a tripod is if I'm when I'm on vacation and just taking snapshots, or shooting where tripods aren't allowed. I have two, a Gitzo series 2 Mountaineer I've owned since 2010, and then last Christmas I got a Feisol 3401 for hiking and travel. I really like the small Feisol. Edited by Mike_R

Fun thread Sandy.

Matt Butler you've got it goin' on! That's one hip clamp and one amazing town.

+1 Mike R. My already heavy kit has become heavier with occasional video. Its also the best place to hang my back pack that carries my folding stool and sunscreen.

Beans, eh, Tony -- considering taking up "music"?

Rice works well, and can be punched into shape easier than with beans. Beans aren't musical unless you actually eat them. They're still considered agricultural products, confiscated at the California border, or garnering a $500 fine on re-entry to the US.

I specified buying beans "in country" on arrival and disposal prior to departure. I cannot imagine a reason I would want to visit California again - at worst, it would just be an unavoidable pass through an airport.

Rice is fine for an improvised microwave heating pad, but I find it less flexible for a camera "sandbag"
