SB-700 speedlight freezes with trigger

I have had my speedlight (SB700) for a few years and have had no problems. Recently I bought a Vello FreeWave LR Wireless Flash Trigger and Receiver to use with it. When the speedlight is sitting on the receiver, it works for a few flashes and then becomes totally unresponsive. It will not trigger and none of the buttons work. I cannot even turn it off without pulling the batteries. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The initial 'freezing' is easily explained by the flash going into standby. A non-dedicated trigger won't be able to wake the flash out of standby.

It's for this reason that I always disable the standby time-out on any remote speedlight. The standby function is never helpful anyway.

Why the flash won't respond to a button press is another issue. I'm not sure it has anything to do with the triggers, but disabling standby should make it a non-issue. Maybe you have a battery problem or something else totally unrelated to the triggers?

I've used a variety of 'dumb' triggers, including some very cheap ones, and never encountered the problem of a flash completely locking up on one. However, I've never used any Vello triggers.
