To fuel "fanboy" delight, here are their rankings in terms of items rented in 2018

Most Popular Photography and Videography Products of 2018

Each year, we comb through our internal data and share some of the insight we’ve seen throughout the calendar year. As a company that rents out tens of thousands of pieces of gear each year, we think we have a pretty good idea of market trends and the most popular products within the fields of photography and videography. And as often as we can, we try to share that insight with our readers. With 2018 being our biggest rental year ever, we wanted to share with you our most rented products for 2018.

Of course, there will be some bias toward items that are specialized, expensive, or hard to find or else people would simply buy the item. Also, there is some bias toward certain classes of photographers.

Wow that article should definitely be a wake up call to Nikon owners. I didn't think that Nikon rentals would be so far behind Canon since it seems that whenever a new Nikon camera comes out, its back ordered before you have time to click on the [bUY] button ?

Why should this be a "wake up call" to anyone? My Nikons still work. Fujis too. Also Olympus OM.

Interesting. What I gather from it is no matter how much some fanboys love to throw at Canon's way they end up renting it. LOL! How ironic. Im still waiting for a strong native Sony lineup that will put Canon's to shame... But, quietly and without anyone knowing it....they still go to Canon's optical supremacy to satisfy their needs. Why dont they rent Sony's lenses?

The main reasons I rent photo gear are...

  • Have a temporary need for something
  • Try it out before making a major purchase
  • Need a backup for a special trip or occasion

These categories can overlap, and are probably not complete. I rented a Sony 100-400 for a trip to Ireland. I was very pleased with the lens. It is still on my short list, but I will probably wait to buy one. (It's higher on the list because I'm using A7 cameras for much of my video, and I need the reach.)

With this in mind, it's possible that more Canon bodies are rented because there are more Canon users out there. If you rent gear from time to time, there are probably hundreds of others who have the same reasons as you.
