The thing that screams to everyone that you are carrying an expensive camera is to take your expensive camera out of the bag and photograph something with it. This is not unique to Leica, even though Leica is a good one to worry about. Using it is a dead give-away. [...]

That's a good point!

I always go out with one body and one lens attached to it---I've never done otherwise. I tried a number of small bags in the past, but there weren't for me; I felt that they were reducing my mobility. Now, the camera I shoot with mostly is a Leica M6 with a 35mm Summicron. Small combo but still obvious. I carry it over my shoulder with the strap diagonally and I use it as is or over my arm and around the neck, then back as before.

However, I admit it, I never feel safe. So, I avoid late hours, dark alleys, and the like. Too bad for my photographic opportunities, of course. The city I spend most of my days has changed, I have to face it and adapt.

It's called basic gear ...https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B076H2DYWY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So far, it's nice. It's a little stiff (more than canvas would be) but I suspect it might loosen up a little with time. So far so good. Probably not waterproof though, so no driving rainstorm.
